Kolkata warehouse accident: Suvendu Adhikari said, ‘I will give statement on compensation after Speaker’s approval’

Kolkata: Three people died after the roof of an under-construction warehouse collapsed in Kolkata. The roof of a three-storey warehouse collapsed in West Kolkata’s Taratala area on Wednesday afternoon, trapping several people under the debris. According to Kolkata Police, 21 people have been evacuated so far. West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari called it a very unfortunate incident and said that rescue operations are underway.

The accident happened at 12:07 pm, the army also participated in the rescue.   

The CM said state minister Agnimitra Paul and other officials visited the spot. I also went to the spot and saw the situation. This incident happened at 12:07 pm. NDRF, Army, SDRF, Police and Fire Department are working together. 12 to 15 people are still trapped inside and the army has contacted them. 21 people have been evacuated. 18 are undergoing treatment and three have died.

Wrong plan was approved   

Suvendu Adhikari said that the accident occurred at 12:07 pm and the rescue operation started at 12:45 pm. Kolkata Police, Civil Defense and KMC teams are at the spot. The rescue work is still going on. It would not be right to reach any conclusion now. So far 21 people have been evacuated. Of these, three have died, 18 are alive and 9 are undergoing treatment at SSKM hospital.

He said that the plan for this project was passed on January 17, 2026. The owner of the land is SMPA and this land is on lease in the name of Shambhunath Behera and his partners. According to initial information, a wrong plan was earlier approved.

I will give a statement on compensation in the Assembly   

The Chief Minister said that the Assembly session is going on, so I will not say anything on compensation right now. I will speak on this subject tomorrow with the permission of the Assembly Speaker. Suvendu told that he will go to SSKM hospital to meet the injured.

Some more people are feared buried under the debris. According to eyewitnesses, large sections of iron beams and concrete fell during construction. Three people lost their lives in this accident that took place on Wednesday afternoon in the capital of West Bengal. About 18 people are trapped under the debris while 21 have been rescued.
