Why ‘Gaadev’ and ‘Devak’ rituals are celebrated in Maharashtrian weddings? find out
Maharashtrian marriage is not just a union of two individuals or families, but a beautiful tradition that weaves together culture, nature, spirituality and family values. The first and foundational ritual of this tradition is the worship of the ‘gaavdev’ (village deity) and installation of the ‘devak’.
1. Blessings of village deity and clan deity
In Maharashtra, every village has a guardian deity, whom we call ‘gramdevata’ or ‘gaavdev’. When starting a big auspicious function like marriage, the chief deity of the village is invited to ensure that there is no hindrance in the house (that the function is carried out smoothly). The first wedding card is always placed at the feet of village deity and clan deity and prayed to bless the marriage.
2. ‘Devak‘ What does that mean??
‘Devak’ means family symbol or symbol. It includes various elements of nature. They are generally worshiped with things like mango leaves, umber or jambhal branches, apata leaves, or an axe.
‘The husband used to exceed the measure, and the wife filled it.
This ritual reminds us that our roots are connected to nature. The main purpose behind this is to let the life of the newly wed couple flourish just as the tree expands.
3. Main purpose and importance of ritual
Remembrance of Pitra and Ancestors: This ritual commemorates not only the Gods, but also our departed ancestors (Pitras). It is believed that no work is completed without his blessings.
Protection from negative energy: A sacred atmosphere is created in the house after installing Devak. It is believed that this keeps away calamities and negative forces from the marriage house or the bride and groom.
Significance of Suhasini: This ritual is performed by 5 Suhasinis of the house together. They set up a Devaka with wheat, rice and turmeric-kunkva, which is a symbol of prosperity.

4. Social and family harmony
In earlier times, entire devotees and villagers used to come together for Gavdev and Devak rituals. Even today all the family members come together on this occasion. This ritual plays a very important role for everyone to participate in the marriage ceremony and to increase the love between each other.
In a nutshell, the ‘Gaadev’ and ‘Devak’ rituals in Maharashtrian weddings are about feelings of gratitude. It is a beautiful and rich tradition of starting a new life by getting out of debt to nature, God and ancestors and taking their blessings. Despite the changes in modern times, the importance of this ritual remains the same.
