This operation was done at King Abdullah Specialist Children’s Hospital. This surgery was completed on the instructions of King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The special thing is that the entire expense of this treatment and operation has been borne by the Saudi government.

Main points of operation

  • This operation was done under Saudi Conjoined Twins Program (SCTP).
  • This was the 72nd successful surgery to be conducted under this programme.
  • This was the fourth such case involving twin girls in the Philippines.
  • The surgery took a total of 6 hours and a team of 22 specialists worked in it.

Dr. Abdullah Al Rabih, who was the head of this team, said that the bodies of the girls were joined from chest to stomach. This rare condition is called thoraco-omphalopagus. Both girls had the same liver and some parts of their intestines were also shared. Besides, the girl also had a congenital defect in her heart, which made the operation quite risky.

Medical balloons were used to stretch the skin before surgery so that the wound could be closed properly after the operation. At present both the girls are in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and their condition is stable. Gianna has yet to undergo another heart operation, only after which the family will return to the Philippines.

The girls’ mother, Ginalyn Manuel, expressed her happiness and said that they had been waiting for this day for a long time. Now their daughters will be able to move around freely and live a normal life.
