India-South Korea: S. said in Jeju Forum. Jaishankar- ‘Increase cooperation in defense sector, explore new paths’

Seoul: Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar has emphasized on further strengthening strategic and economic relations between India and South Korea (Republic of Korea). He said on Thursday that both the countries should cooperate more closely in key areas like shipbuilding, health, infrastructure and defence.

What did Jaishankar say at Jeju Forum 2026?

The Foreign Minister was addressing the ‘Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity 2026’ organized on Jeju Island in South Korea. Giving a new direction to the partnership between the two countries from the stage, he said,

“India and the Republic of Korea need to cooperate more closely. The potential that exists between us in areas such as shipbuilding, digital, health, infrastructure and defence, should be fully utilised.”

He further said that there is a strong need to further strengthen economic and technological partnership, political and strategic cooperation and public relations between the two countries.

Emphasis on global order and ‘Global South’

During the address S. Jaishankar also said many important things regarding global stability.

Influential countries should promote new agreements and cooperative relationships to stabilize the global order and solve common problems. The Global South should be given more potential and opportunities, so that new avenues of global development can be opened. The blatant prioritization of the interests of some countries has an impact on the wider community and leaves some countries with less consideration. Which should be balanced through greater cooperation. Issues like pandemics, terrorism and climate change are not limited to any borders, hence international cooperation is extremely essential.

Meeting with Ban Ki-moon and many leaders

On the sidelines of the forum, the Foreign Minister also held meetings with global leaders. During this, he met former Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) Ban Ki-moon and former Prime Minister of Mongolia Gombojav Zandanshatar and discussed various issues.

Earlier, on Wednesday, Jaishankar held a high-level bilateral talk with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun. In this talk, increasing cooperation in areas like trade, investment and finance was discussed in detail. The talks focused on various issues decided during the visit of South Korean President Lee Jae-myung to India in April.
