The ‘tension’ of food providers will be very high! This secret formula of 72 hours and crop compensation directly in your bank account!

PM Fasal Bima Yojana: Agriculture sector has an important contribution in the economy of India. Our farmer brothers grow crops to feed the country’s approximately 147 crore population. Sell at MSP and run your own house. But sometimes changing weather conditions spoil the hard work of farmers. Natural disasters like unseasonal rains, droughts, floods destroy months of hard work of farmers. Crops get ruined and farmers suffer huge financial losses. Understanding this pain of the farmers, the Ministry of Agriculture of the Government of India raised a new hope on 18 February 2016, whose name is Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY). Under this scheme, which is called the security cover of farmers, compensation is given to the farmers in case of crop failure, which helps the farmers to recover from the losses to a great extent.

What is crop insurance scheme?

Just like we get our car or our health insured so that it does not put a heavy burden on our pockets in times of trouble, similarly this scheme insures the crops. If your crop gets damaged due to natural disaster, disease or insects, the government gives you compensation. Under this scheme, Rabi and Kharif season crops of the farmers have been included in which the farmers have to pay only 2 percent premium, the rest of the premium is paid by the government. Due to which the burden on the farmers does not increase and in case of loss, the farmers get insurance claims at cheaper rates.

What troubles does it save you from?

Under PM Crop Insurance Scheme, not only flood, drought or other natural calamities are covered, but it also provides protection from the preparation of the field till the harvest.

Nature’s havoc: El Nino, hailstorm, drought, waterlogging, flood, landslide, storm, cyclone or unseasonal heavy rain.

Insects and diseases: If the crop gets ruined due to some unknown disease or attack by insects like locusts.

Losses after harvesting: Claim will be available even if the crop kept for drying in the field after harvesting gets damaged due to cyclone or unseasonal rain within the next 14 days.

Alnino protection cover

An El Nino alert has been issued by the Indian Meteorological Department due to which there is a possibility of damage to crops due to unseasonal rains. Since this is a change in nature, it cannot be stopped but farmers can be alerted, hence they are constantly being advised to join the crop insurance scheme so that they can file claims for losses. Due to El Nino, there is often a danger of pests and diseases appearing. In such a situation, by getting crop insurance, you will be able to avoid being indebted to moneylenders and village landlords.

How much premium is to be paid?

Most of the farmers do not get crop insurance because the premium burden becomes high, but the best thing about PMFBY is that the insurance premium rates have been kept affordable so that not only big farmers but also farmers with small land holdings can easily take advantage of it. Under this scheme, 27 states as well as union territories of the country are covered where 18 insurance companies, 1.7 lakh bank branches and 44000 common service centers are providing services.

  1. Kharif crop- For insuring crops like paddy and maize, a premium of 2% of the total amount has to be paid.
  2. Rabi crop- Insurance premium for Rabi season crops like wheat and mustard has been kept at 1.5%.
  3. Horticulture Crop- For insuring commercial and horticultural crops, the premium has been kept at 5%, the remaining contribution comes from the government.

How to get loss claim?

If you are also a farmer and have got your crop insured under PMFBY, then for the claim you will have to contact the insurance company within 72 hours and explain the reasons for crop damage. For this, customer care numbers are also provided by the concerned insurance company. In this matter, you can also contact the nearest Agricultural Science Center or the District Agriculture Officer and give written information. The condition of the claim is that the crop loss is due to the reasons mentioned and the insurance company is informed within 3 days. If there is delay in this work or late call, insurance companies refuse to pass the claim.

How to get your crop insured?

The most essential condition under the Prime Minister Crop Insurance Scheme is that the farmer has to apply on the official website pmfby.gov.in within 10 days of sowing the crop. This work can also be done through the nearest bank, co-operative society or public convenience center (CSC). Once insured, there is no need to worry about crop damage and huge losses due to natural calamities or sudden changes in weather. Under PMFBY, PMFBY AIDE mobile application has also been launched on which one can easily get crop insurance sitting at home.

Claim amount comes directly into account

This year an alert has been issued for El Nino. If the farmer brothers who have insured their crop suffer loss in the crop due to unexpected changes in the weather, then they will first inform the concerned insurance company within 72 hours or 3 days. The insurance company will contact the farmer, do physical verification of the damaged crop, and the loss will be assessed. After this the compensation amount will be transferred directly to the farmer’s bank account.

Where can I check crop insurance claim?

As soon as the insurance companies do the physical verification of your crop, the process of passing the claim starts. In such a situation, you do not need to go to government offices or insurance company offices. You login to the Farmers Corner of the official website of PMFBY. Enter your farmer ID and policy number here. After this you can see the status of your insurance claim.
