Indian ships will now be able to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, DGS issued security instructions

Mumbai, 27 June. The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) has lifted the ban on Indian ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. However, the captains and crew of the ships have been instructed to remain fully alert and strictly follow the prescribed safety rules.

“The International Maritime Organization (IMO), in collaboration with coastal countries and the maritime industry, has launched a coordinated arrangement for the safe evacuation of stranded seafarers,” the Directorate General of Shipping said in a circular. In this, IMO, UKMTO, MICA Center and concerned coastal countries are working together. The DGS is in constant touch with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Ministry of External Affairs, Indian Navy, Indian Missions abroad and other concerned agencies to ensure the safety and interests of Indian seafarers.

The DGS clarified that there is no restriction on Indian shipowners, ship management companies and RPSL agencies to continue operating vessels in the Persian Gulf region or to deploy Indian sailors. Only they have to follow the security rules issued by the coastal countries and security agencies. However, the DGS has advised all Indian seafarers, ship captains, ship owners, management companies, operators, RPSL companies and all persons associated with the maritime sector to exercise utmost caution while operating in the Persian Gulf.

The circular states that captains of ships operating in or passing through the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz or surrounding sea areas should remain fully alert regarding safety. They should constantly monitor all warnings and instructions issued by security agencies and follow all rules related to ship safety.

The DGS has also said that all concerned should keep an eye on the advisories and instructions issued by the DGS, Ministry of External Affairs, Indian Missions abroad and other government agencies from time to time. If any incident occurs involving an Indian sailor, immediately inform the DG Communication Center and Crew Branch.

Furthermore, all persons have also been advised to first verify the veracity of news, videos or other material regarding any security incident involving ships from government and official sources. Avoid further sharing unverified news, social media posts or fake videos. DGS said that all these steps have been taken keeping in mind the safety, interests and welfare of Indian seafarers.
