Great earthquake in Nepal’s politics! Balen Shah’s fear or fear of going to jail? Oli and Prachanda are coming together again after years
Nepal’s politics has now come to a very shocking turn, where till yesterday the leaders who were thirsty for each other’s blood and kept fighting against each other for years for power, are now preparing to embrace each other again. We are talking about two veteran communist leaders of Nepal – KP Sharma Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’. Both the old enemies have now forgotten all their grudges and have decided to join hands again.
Interestingly, the reason for this new closeness is not just to get the chair of Kathmandu or to form the government. The real inside story behind this is the changing political environment, the investigation into corruption on a large scale, the crushing defeat in the recent elections and the growing anger among the youth of the country. Now the big question arising in the minds of political pundits all over the world is whether this alliance will last this time or will history repeat itself and it will break again within a few months? Let us explain to you the complete mathematics of this new inside politics of Nepal.
Sometimes a close friend and sometimes a known enemy… now preparations for patch up again
In the political circles of Nepal, the relationship between KP Sharma Oli and Prachanda has always been full of ups and downs like a suspense film. In the 2017 general elections, both of them contested the elections together and achieved a historic majority. Then behind the scenes a deal was made that both the leaders would become the Prime Minister of the country by turns for two and a half years. But as soon as they came to power, their relationship turned sour. Prachanda accused Oli of completely pushing him aside, after which the two parted ways. After this, in the year 2022 also both of them formed the government together, but that alliance could also last only for two months and Prachanda changed sides and joined the government with Nepali Congress.
Fear of corruption investigation and arrest became the biggest game changer.
According to political experts, the biggest and real reason for the sudden coming closer of the two big communist leaders this time is the rapidly increasing investigation in corruption cases and the fear of going to jail. In recent months, investigation into the secret assets of many VIPs and big leaders of Nepal has started. After the sudden arrest of senior UML leader Bishnu Paudel, the party had termed it as an act of pure political vendetta.
Not only this, the arrest of KP Sharma Oli himself in the month of March had created a stir in the entire politics of Nepal. Now the leaders of the communist camp are afraid that if this impartial investigation progresses at this pace, then many more big faces may have to go to jail. This fear of going to jail is now forcing both the leaders to forget their old enmity and come on the same platform.
The election results of March 2026 shook the ground of both the parties.
Recently, in the general elections of Nepal held in March 2026, the public had given a big and crushing blow to both these parties. In the election results, KP Sharma Oli’s UML party could get only 25 seats, while former Prime Minister Prachanda’s party NCP (MC) was limited to only 17 seats. After this crushing defeat, both the big leaders understood the bitter reality that only they had suffered a direct loss by fighting separate elections and due to the division of Communist votes, other new parties had won. Now, just before the local body elections to be held in the year 2027, both the leaders want to reunite their scattered vote banks at any cost so that the lost political power can be regained.
Gen-Z and Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah increase the tension of veterans
At present, the historic movement of youth and new generation in Nepal has completely changed the direction and condition of politics which was following the old path. The new generation of Nepal i.e. Gen-Z, active on social media and on the ground, is now demanding a direct account of their work from these old and traditional leaders. The growing influence of young leader and very popular mayor of Kathmandu Balen Shah and the vocal voice of the youth against corruption has taken the ground from under the feet of these established leaders.
While Prachanda had secretly supported this youth movement at the time of elections, KP Sharma Oli had called it a big conspiracy against the country. But the election results of March made it clear that the mood of the youth has now completely changed. Now both the old lions are afraid that if they still remain separate, then this new and dynamic wave of youth will completely erase them from the political map. This is the reason why efforts for communist unity have suddenly been intensified.
Today Oli and Prachanda will be seen on the same stage, the eyes of the whole world are fixed.
Today i.e. on June 28, KP Sharma Oli and Prachanda are going to be seen together in a big state program on the 75th birth anniversary of Nepal’s great communist leader Madan Bhandari. Both the leaders will share the stage together after a very long time. In political circles, it is being seen not just as a tribute program but as an attempt to give a very big and strong political message to the opponents.
Through this common platform, an effort will be made to show the general public and international forces that all the communist parties of Nepal are now united again. Former President of Nepal Bidya Devi Bhandari is also going to be specially present in this program. Now the eyes of the whole world and the citizens of Nepal are fixed on how long this new friendship, which started due to fear of corruption and electoral compulsion, will last.
