Before the monsoon session, discussion on reshuffle in Modi cabinet intensifies, will many ministers including Dharmendra Pradhan be on leave?

New Delhi. The government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi can make a major reshuffle in the Union Cabinet before the monsoon session of Parliament. Under this exercise, important changes can take place in the Council of Ministers. Sources said that the top leadership of BJP has finalized the list of office bearers and ‘Nitin Naveen’s team’ is likely to be announced soon. Young faces of the party are likely to be given the responsibility of key positions in the organization. The BJP president had also held discussions with some Union Ministers of State last week. There is a strong possibility that some Union ministers will be sent to take up organizational roles in the BJP and party functionaries will be inducted into the Modi cabinet. There is also speculation about change of departments of some ministers.

There is also uncertainty over the future of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan due to several controversies related to the ministry, including the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) question paper leak and irregularities in the Digital Evaluation System of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). According to sources, Hardeep Singh Puri may also be removed from the cabinet as part of the reshuffle. At the same time, there may be changes in the roles of ministers playing organizational roles, such as Pankaj Chaudhary, who recently became BJP Uttar Pradesh President and Delhi BJP President Harsh Malhotra, under the BJP’s “one person, one post” principle.

Will Anurag Thakur return?

There is talk of former RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das joining the cabinet as a new member, while the return of former minister Anurag Thakur to the government is also being considered. There is also speculation that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman may be given the responsibility of HRD (Education) department as part of the comprehensive restructuring process.

Sources say that in the reshuffle, attention can also be given to giving representation to leaders of states like Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab and West Bengal. BJP may also consider including allies and recently joined political groups. George Kurien has resigned from the Union Council of Ministers, while Ravneet Singh Bittu may be given bigger organizational responsibility focusing on the politics of Punjab. However, the names of possible exits, new entrants and portfolio changes will be known only after receiving official confirmation from the government.

MPs from TMC, Shiv Sena-UBT, AAP may get a chance

Some representatives of the rebel factions of Trinamool Congress and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) are also likely to get ministerial posts. There is also a possibility that a senior official of Shinde-led Shiv Sena may be made a cabinet minister. Sources said that one or two of the seven Rajya Sabha members who left Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and joined BJP may get a place in the Council of Ministers. However, any decision to include members of rebel factions of Trinamool Congress and Shiv Sena (Ubhatha) in the Council of Ministers will depend on the decision of the Lok Sabha Speaker. The parent parties of both have demanded termination of their membership under the anti-defection law.
