Two killed, two injured as lightning strikes hit Jharkhand

Two people, including a three-year-old girl, were killed while two others sustained burn injuries in separate lightning strike incidents in Jharkhand on Sunday, officials said.

According to officials, the fatalities occurred as thunderstorms accompanied by lightning affected parts of the state. The deceased included a three-year-old child, while two other people suffered burn injuries after being struck by lightning in separate incidents.

Authorities said the injured were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. Their condition was not immediately disclosed, while local officials continued to monitor the situation.

Police and district administration officials reached the affected locations after receiving information about the incidents. Preliminary inquiries indicated that the victims were caught outdoors when lightning struck during adverse weather conditions.

Lightning strikes are a recurring hazard during the monsoon season in Jharkhand, where thunderstorms frequently occur across several districts. State authorities have repeatedly urged residents to remain indoors during thunderstorms and avoid taking shelter under isolated trees or venturing into open fields when lightning activity is reported.

Disaster management officials continue to advise people to monitor weather alerts issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and follow safety advisories during periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms.

Officials said district authorities are assessing the circumstances surrounding the incidents, while local administrations remain on alert in view of forecasts predicting continued rainfall and thunderstorms in several parts of the state.

Emergency response teams have also been directed to remain prepared to respond to weather-related incidents as the southwest monsoon continues to influence weather conditions across eastern India.

The latest incidents highlight the risks associated with lightning during the monsoon season. Authorities have reiterated that timely precautions and adherence to official weather advisories can significantly reduce casualties caused by lightning strikes.

Further details regarding the identities of the victims and the exact locations of the incidents are awaited. Officials said necessary assistance would be extended in accordance with government norms.
