Burkina Faso breaks diplomatic relations with France, tension increases
The military government of Burkina Faso has announced the termination of diplomatic relations with France. The government accused France of carrying out activities against the interests of the country and adopting neo-colonial thinking, while France described these allegations as baseless.
Ouagadougou: West African country Burkina Faso has given a big message in international politics by announcing the end of diplomatic relations with its former colonial ruler France. The military regime alleged that France was continuing to take steps that are against Burkina Faso’s national interests. The government says that the basis of mutual respect and trust between the two countries has ended, hence this decision was taken.
This decision is not being considered limited to bilateral relations only, but is also being linked to the changing strategic equation in West Africa, decline in French influence and the increasing influence of new global players like Russia-China. Experts believe that this step could affect the diplomatic direction of the entire Sahel region.
Military government made serious allegations against France
Burkina Faso’s Minister of Communications Pingadwende Gilbert Ouedraogo presented the government’s official position via national broadcast. He said that France has been interfering in the internal affairs of the country for a long time and its policies reflect neo-colonial thinking.
According to the government, France was not only exerting political pressure but also supporting networks that could undermine the country’s stability. The military administration claims that efforts were being made to marginalize Burkina Faso even on international forums.
For these reasons the Government concluded that it was not possible to maintain normal diplomatic relations under the present circumstances.
France called the decision baseless
The French Foreign Ministry rejected Burkina Faso’s allegations, calling the decision “hostile and baseless.” The French government says that this decision is not in line with the long relations between the two countries and may also affect regional stability.
France has also appealed to its citizens to exercise extra vigilance in Burkina Faso. However, he also made it clear that he understands the importance of security and counter-terrorism efforts in the region.
Relations continued to deteriorate after the military coup of 2022
The tension in the relations between the two countries did not come suddenly. It began in September 2022, when Captain Ibrahim Traore took power through a military coup.
After coming to power, the new government adopted a critical stance towards Western countries, especially France. The military leadership claimed that despite years of French military cooperation, the security situation in the country had not improved as expected.
After this, Burkina Faso decided to end the presence of French troops and asked them to leave the country. This step proved to be a turning point in the relations between the two countries.
Burkina Faso is struggling with terrorism
Burkina Faso has been facing serious challenges from Islamic extremist violence and terrorist attacks for the past decade. Militant groups operating in the northern and eastern regions of the country have killed thousands of people and forced millions of civilians to be displaced.
Due to this security crisis, France had conducted military operations in the region for a long time. However, the military government believes that these operations did not yield the desired results and that foreign intervention did not provide a permanent solution to the problems. Based on this thinking, the government has made comprehensive changes in the security policy.
Burkina Faso is moving towards Russia and China
Along with increasing distance from France, Burkina Faso has also changed its foreign policy. In recent years, the country has placed special emphasis on increasing cooperation with Russia and China.
Several initiatives have been taken towards strengthening security cooperation, military training and defense partnership with Russia. At the same time, the government is also focused on increasing cooperation with China in the areas of infrastructure, investment and economic development.
Analysts believe that this change is not limited to Burkina Faso alone, but is indicative of a changing balance of power in the entire Sahel region.
Regional politics is changing in the Sahel region
Burkina Faso is not the only country that has distanced itself from Western influence. Neighboring countries Mali and Niger have also come under military rule in recent years and have limited relations with France.
These three countries separated from the West African regional organization ECOWAS in January 2025 and formed a new regional grouping called the Alliance of Sahel States. Its objective was said to be to strengthen security, economic cooperation and collective defense system.
This alliance is being seen as a new chapter in regional politics.
The promise of restoring democracy was not fulfilled
The military government had promised to hold democratic elections and restore civilian rule after taking power. According to the initial plan, the democratic system was to be restored by 2024.
However, the government later backed out from this deadline. After this, restrictions were also imposed on the activities of political parties and in January this year many political organizations were formally dissolved.
Due to these incidents, the international community has expressed concern about the state of democratic institutions in the country.
Historical relations will not end completely
Interestingly, Burkina Faso also clarified in its official statement that the decision to end diplomatic relations is limited only to the government and institutional level.
The government said that the purpose of this decision is not to affect the historical, cultural, social and human relations existing between the people of the two countries. The decades-long social ties between the citizens of France and Burkina Faso will continue.
This statement is also being seen as an indication of keeping the possibilities of future dialogue open between the two countries.
The post of French ambassador was already vacant
The post of France’s Ambassador to Burkina Faso was lying vacant since January 2023. This itself was an indication that relations between the two countries were already going through a period of serious tension.
Now that diplomatic relations have formally ended, government-level communication between the two countries may become more limited. It is also likely to impact trade, security cooperation and development projects in the future.
Regional security may be affected
The Sahel region already faces serious challenges such as terrorism, political instability and humanitarian crisis. At such a time, ending relations between France and Burkina Faso could affect the regional security system.
Experts believe that if security cooperation decreases, joint operations against terrorist organizations may weaken. On the other hand, the military government believes that through new strategic partnerships it will be able to make its security system more effective.
