Woman slashed in Bangkok as suspect claims he ‘dislikes overweight people’

The unprovoked attack occurred around 11:30 a.m. last Saturday outside a convenience store near the entrance to Soi Silom 5, a popular outdoor shopping street.

The victim, Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tram, a Vietnamese national working in Thailand, was walking along the pavement when the suspect slashed her arm with a nine-inch box cutter before fleeing the scene, The Tiger reported.

Seeking help, Tram ran into the nearby convenience store, where staff administered immediate first aid.

The store manager promptly contacted authorities and arranged for her transport to the hospital, where Thai media outlet I understand noted her injuries required 14 stitches.

Police tracked the suspect to a neighboring street in the Silom area following security camera footage.

Due to reports of his large physical stature and the likelihood he was still armed, officers called for backup before safely taking him into custody. Investigators also recovered the box cutter believed to be the weapon used in the assault.

Authorities identified the suspect as 30-year-old Esana from Lop Buri Province. He currently faces charges of causing bodily harm resulting in physical injury, Khaosod reported.

The victim positively identified him after returning from her hospital treatment.

During police questioning, Esana confessed to the attack, claiming to Khaosod that his motive was a “dislike for overweight people.”
