Clash over UCC in Bengal, opposition surrounds government fiercely!

The issue of Uniform Civil Code (UCC) continues to be the center of political debate in West Bengal. While the government is pushing for a Uniform Civil Code, the opposition parties have called it an attempt to divert public attention from real issues. Shiv Sena (UBT), Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Congress leaders on Monday raised questions on the government’s intentions regarding UCC.

Speaking to IANS, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Anand Dubey said, “The opposition is ready to discuss every issue related to the country. He said that the opposition supports positive discussion on any important bill, but will also oppose it if there are flaws in the policies and functioning of the government.”

Anand Dubey said, “Be it the UCC bill or any bill related to the country, the opposition always stands with the country. If you are dishonest, we will also stand against it. Bring the bill, let’s discuss it in a positive manner.” He alleged that the government brings up big issues to hide its failures and avoid criticism. He said that the opposition does not shy away from discussing any major bill.

At the same time, TMC MP Dola Sen cited the Constitution and diversity of the country regarding UCC. “Any reform should start from home,” he said. He questioned whether those talking about UCC implement equality on the basis of gender, religion and caste in their parties and organizations.

Dola Sen said that the Constitution of India is based on the principle of ‘unity in diversity’. Referring to the lines of Rabindranath Tagore, he said that India has different languages, thoughts and traditions, taking them together is the strength of the country. He claimed that trying to implement any one system from above could go against the diversity of the country.

He said that in the Constitution, India has been described as a union of many states, where there is a provision to take all communities and regions together. Dola Sen accused the government regarding UCC that it raises questions about sovereignty, secularism and democratic values.

Congress Rajya Sabha member Pawan Kheda also targeted the government regarding UCC. “This issue is being raised to divert public attention from other matters. The government is only trying to change the headlines and avoid discussing the real issues,” he alleged.
