Punjab News: ‘War against drugs’ intensifies: Government’s big action on drugs in Punjab





Punjab News: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, while reviewing the ongoing ‘War on Drugs’ campaign across the state, directed all the Deputy Commissioners, Police Commissioners and Senior Superintendents of Police to further intensify this campaign till Punjab is completely drug free. In the virtual meeting held from Bathinda, the Chief Minister said that the top priority of the government is to save the young generation of Punjab from drugs.

Strict action against drug smugglers, damage to supply line

The Chief Minister said that under the ‘zero tolerance’ policy of the government, the supply chain has been weakened by arresting big drug smugglers. He instructed the officials that public participation should be increased in every village and there should not be any laxity in taking action against drug smugglers.

Important role of village defense committees

In the meeting, the Chief Minister informed that in the last three months, more than 13,000 complaints have been registered against drug smugglers through Village Defense Committees. He announced to hold monthly meetings of these committees in all the districts and conduct regular reviews at the state level itself. Along with this, instructions were also given to keep the identity of the complainants completely confidential.

Big expansion in the capacity of de-addiction centers

The Chief Minister said that for the treatment and rehabilitation of people affected by drug addiction, the government has increased the number of beds in de-addiction and rehabilitation centers from 1,500 to 5,000. Many new centers have been established and existing centers have been provided with better facilities including air conditioning. Apart from this, the number of OOT centers has been increased from 529 to 565, where regular availability of essential medicines has been ensured.

‘Surma’ will become the brand ambassador of de-addiction campaign

Referring to the ‘Soorma’ initiative, the Chief Minister said that by honoring people who have been living a drug-free life for more than two years, they will be made inspiration for the de-addiction campaign. These people will go to the society and inspire other youth to quit drug addiction and will strengthen the awareness campaign with the government.

Drug free Punjab will be made through public participation

Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann said that the fight against drugs cannot be won by government action alone, but it will have to be made a mass movement. He called upon the officials to involve all sections of the society in this campaign, establish regular dialogue in the villages and motivate the youth towards sports, skill development and positive activities. The Chief Minister expressed confidence that with the joint efforts of Punjab Police and the public, the state will be made completely drug free.
