OBC Reservation News Marathi : West Bengal The Legislative Assembly on Monday (June 29, 2026) passed two important amendment bills related to OBC Reservation. 186 MLAs voted in favor, 17 MLAs voted against and six abstained. The implementation of the new laws will bring major changes in the OBC reservation system in the state. The reservation structure has been reduced from 17 percent to 7 percent and the OBC categories have also been restructured.
State Backward Classes Development Minister Gauri Shankar Ghosh introduced the “West Bengal Backward Classes (Excluding SC-ST) Reservation of Vacancies in Services and Posts Amendment Bill, 2026” and the “West Bengal Backward Classes Commission Amendment Bill, 2026” in the Legislative Assembly. On this occasion, Gaurishankar said that the government’s move is entirely in accordance with the directions of the Calcutta High Court and there is no political motive behind it.

…113 categories we have excluded: Gaurishankar Ghosh
Gauri Shankar Ghosh told the House, “We have dropped 113 categories which were included earlier without any field survey, while retaining 66 sub-categories which were included on the basis of various surveys.” He added, “The Backward Classes Commission will conduct an inquiry and if it feels that any community should be included, it will make a recommendation to the state government. The previous government had sidelined the commission, which is why the High Court rejected the entire process.” As per the amended law, the state government can now decide the percentage of reservation for various OBC categories in consultation with the Backward Classes Commission. The Second Amendment also clarified the composition, powers and responsibilities of the Commission.
Oppose this decision
Meanwhile, this decision was also opposed. ISF MLA Nawashad Siddiqui said, “The amendment brought by the government seems to be an attempt to isolate a particular community. We oppose it. Be it Hindu community, Christian community or any other community, all should be scientifically surveyed and decisions should be taken based on that.” Also as directed by the Supreme Court, any change in the extent of reservation requires concrete statistics or scientific evaluation. However, the state government is moving towards reducing OBC reservation without sufficient data and this issue is not addressed in the Bill.”
