The bullet train service will start at about 100 km stretch between Surat and Vapi. Dharmendra Tiwari, Additional Director General of Indian Railways said that important work on the entire corridor has already been completed. The first phase of the bullet train project will be operational in 2027 between the cities of Surat and Vapi, covering a distance of about 100 km. This will be the first phase of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project. The country’s first bullet train project has taken a long time and has stalled due to cost overruns and delays.

Total 12 stations

The first stop on this route will be Sabarmati in Gujarat and the last stop will be Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra. The next station starting from Sabarmati in Gujarat will be Ahmedabad. From Ahmedabad, the train will travel to Anand, Vadodara, Bharuch, Surat, Bilimora, Vapi, Boisar, Virar, Thane and finally Mumbai. The trains running on the country’s first bullet train route will run at a speed of 320 km per hour and cover a distance of 508 km in just 2 hours and 7 minutes.

The Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train project was expected to be completed in 2023. This iconic project, which uses Japan’s ‘Shinkansen’ technology, was inaugurated in 2017 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the then Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe. The project was expected to be completed in 2023, but three years later, in 2026, none of its phases have been fully completed. Hence, the project will take a few more years to complete.

An ambitious project of 508 km

The total length of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train route is 508 km. Among them:

348 km route in Gujarat

156 km route in Maharashtra

The 4 km route is between Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

After the completion of this project, the travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad is expected to reduce from the current 6 to 7 hours to around 2 to 3 hours.

Modern stations and facilities

State-of-the-art stations, high-level security systems, anti-seismic technology, automatic signaling system and world-class passenger facilities are being developed under the bullet train project. The project is expected to give a major boost to employment generation, industrial development and economic connectivity between Maharashtra and Gujarat.
