Who is Kamal Akhtar who suddenly left the post of SP Chief Whip?

Lucknow/Moradabad. The big news of this time is coming from the politics of UP. Kamal Akhtar, a prominent Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA from Kanth assembly seat of Moradabad, suddenly took a big step on Tuesday (June 30). He has resigned from the post of Chief Whip of SP in Uttar Pradesh Legislature. This sudden resignation, which came in the midst of the election year, has intensified the stir in the political circles of the state. Everyone is trying to understand what is the real story behind this decision.

Confirming his resignation, Kamal Akhtar said that he has taken this step on the instructions of National President Akhilesh Yadav. He clearly said that Akhilesh Yadav is our leader and it is the duty of every worker and MLA to follow his orders. The MLA argues that responsibilities keep changing from time to time in politics and organization. He was handling this responsibility for about one and a half years and now his entire focus will be on his assembly seat, because he has to contest further elections. But, the discussion in the political corridors from Lucknow to Moradabad is something else. Those having inside information believe that this is not a normal routine change, but the ongoing factionalism and tussle within the SP in Moradabad could be a major reason behind it.

Who is Kamal Akhtar and what is his political journey?

Kamal Akhtar is a well-known name in the politics of Western Uttar Pradesh. Within SP, he is seen as a very experienced and powerful Muslim face. Kamal Akhtar’s biggest strength has been that he was counted among the leaders very close to former Chief Minister late Mulayam Singh Yadav. He has a long and deep experience from organization to running the government.

If we look at his political journey, he was elected Rajya Sabha MP for the first time in the year 2004 and remained a member of the Upper House till 2010. After this, in the 2012 assembly elections, he won the legislative election for the first time from Hasanpur seat. His stature in the then Akhilesh Yadav government was so strong that he was first given the responsibility of important ministries like Panchayati Raj and later Food and Logistics. Although he faced defeat in the wave of 2017, he did not give up. In the 2022 assembly elections, SP fielded him from Kanth seat of Moradabad, where he registered a historic victory. According to the election affidavit, he has assets worth about Rs 7 crore 89 lakh.

Is Akhilesh Yadav making big preparations for 2027?

In fact, even though there is still time left for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections 2027, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has already started setting his sights. Political pundits believe that Kamal Akhtar’s resignation could be a part of this big ‘political shuffle’. Akhilesh Yadav is preparing to make major changes at both the organization and legislative party levels so that any kind of weakness can be removed before entering the electoral field.

According to the ongoing discussions within the party, there may be a change in the responsibilities of some more big faces in the coming days. The party now wants to fully field those leaders who have a strong hold on their seats, so that they can consolidate their ground without any additional organizational pressure. Kamal Akhtar’s focus has also now been asked to shift completely to Kanth Vidhan Sabha.

However, whatever be the reason being given, the resignation of such a big leader of Western UP as Chief Whip is giving rise to many new equations. Now it remains to be seen that to which new and reliable face Akhilesh Yadav will hand over the command of Chief Whip in place of Kamal Akhtar in the Legislature, so that regional and caste balance can also be maintained.
