He started his political career as an MLA by winning the Dum Dum North seat on a Trinamool Congress ticket in the 2011 assembly elections. After this he won the election from Kanti South and then again from Dum Dum North. In 2012, he was made Minister of State in the first expansion of Mamata Banerjee’s cabinet. After serving as Minister of State in the portfolios of Health and Family Welfare, Lands and Land Reforms, Refugees and Rehabilitation, he was given the Finance portfolio with independent charge. She continued to hold the responsibility of Finance (Independent Charge) from 2021 to 2026. She has also served as a cabinet minister in the Law and Justice Department.
