Violence during protest in PoK, claim of one dead in firing; Many injured, situation tense

Rawalakot. Violence broke out at several places on Sunday amid the ongoing protests in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK). Jammu and Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) and other organizations alleged that Pakistani security forces opened fire and used force against peaceful protesters, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to several others. However, these claims could not be independently verified.

Thousands of people joined the protest

On the call of JAAC, a large number of people gathered at the Sardar Ghulam Hussain Khan Sports Stadium in Abbaspur. The organization claims that more than 40 thousand people took part in the demonstration. The protesters protested against the recent arrests of human rights activists and people associated with the movement and demanded their immediate release.

JAAC says that security forces took action at many places to suppress the ongoing movement demanding basic rights. The organization alleged that the protesters were fired upon without any provocation in the Dudial area.

Claim of death in firing

The PoK unit of former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) claimed that a protester was killed in the firing in Dadyal Amb area. Apart from this, information has also been given that many other people were injured. However, no official confirmation has come from the Pakistan administration in this regard.




  • Clashes in many areas including Muzaffarabad

    There were also reports of clashes between protesters and security forces in Muzaffarabad. JAAC alleged that security forces fired tear gas shells and damaged the motorcycles of several protesters. According to the organization, tense situation also remained in many areas including Manak Pian, Sangi Mera, Tavarabad, Lower Chhatra and Beila Noor Shah.

    Movement increased due to dispute over reserved seats

    The dispute between JAAC and the administration in PoK regarding 12 reserved seats of the assembly is continuously deepening. The organization alleges that the government is trying to suppress the movement on this issue. At the same time, a detailed response in this regard has not yet been received from the administration.

    Appeal for help and support from India

    In a video viral on social media, Sardar Aman Khan, associated with JAAC, appealed to the people of the Indian side of the Line of Control (LOC) for assistance with food items and medicines. In the video he claimed that there is a shortage of essential commodities in many areas. He also demanded abolition of borders and making movement among people easier. The video could not be independently verified.

    Demonstrations took place abroad also

    Protests were also organized abroad regarding the situation in PoK. People of the Kashmiri community demonstrated in Auckland, New Zealand, demanding the release of the arrested activists including the leaders of JAAC.

    At the same time, a large number of people participated in the ‘London Kashmir Million March’ organized in the British capital London. The protesters marched from Parliament Square to Pakistan High Commission to protest against alleged human rights violations in PoK and demanded the immediate release of arrested political leaders and activists.
