Islamabad. On Tuesday, terrorists launched a major attack on the security post of a dam project in Pakistan’s restive Baluchistan province. At least nine policemen were killed in this attack, while many other security personnel are reported missing. After the incident, high alert has been declared in the entire area and a massive search operation is being conducted.
Dam project post targeted
According to officials, the attack took place on a police post guarding the Mangi Dam Project in Balochistan. District Officer Abdul Qudus said that heavily armed gunmen suddenly attacked, killing nine policemen. Many senior police officers are also included in the dead.
The spokesperson of the provincial government also confirmed the incident and said that several policemen are missing after the attack, the search for whom is going on.
Counter-operation against terrorists-
Balochistan government spokesman Shahid Rind said that immediately after the attack, police, paramilitary forces and counter-terrorism units started a joint operation. Security forces are continuously taking action in search of the attackers and security has been tightened in the entire area.
The provincial government has blamed Islamic terrorist groups for the attack.
Balochistan has been in unrest for a long time-
Balochistan is the largest province of Pakistan and rich in mineral resources. Its borders are with Afghanistan and Iran. The region has long been a center of separatist violence and terrorist activities. Apart from security forces, foreign investment and infrastructure projects are also often the target of terrorists.
Controversy over cross border terrorism increased again-
There has been a steady increase in terrorist attacks in the border areas of Pakistan in recent months. Pakistan alleges that many terrorist attacks are carried out from the border of Afghanistan. However, the Taliban government of Afghanistan has continuously denied these allegations.
Pakistan has also carried out several air strikes inside the Afghan border in recent months. Islamabad claims that their targets were terrorist hideouts, while the Taliban administration and the United Nations say that a large number of civilians have also lost their lives in these attacks.
