Delhi-NCR monsoon rain becomes a disaster, 10 km long jam in Gurugram

After a long wait, monsoon has now become fully active in most parts of the country. While the continuous heavy rains in Delhi-NCR, Haryana, Punjab, Maharashtra and many areas of Western India have provided relief from the heat, on the other hand it has also badly affected normal life. In many cities, the traffic system broke down due to incidents like waterlogging, road subsidence and landslides.

Due to the rain, there were several kilometers long jams on major highways, due to which thousands of passengers had to face problems for hours.

Road sunken in Gurugram, long jam on NH-48

After heavy rains on Tuesday in Gurugram, Haryana, a part of the road caved in near Narsinghpur area on Delhi-Jaipur National Highway (NH-48). Due to this incident which took place near Sunbeam Company, the movement of vehicles on the highway was affected.

After the road collapse, there was a traffic jam of about 8 to 10 kilometers long from IFFCO Chowk to Narsinghpur. People returning from office and travelers going to other states had to remain stuck in the traffic jam for several hours.

Administration issued alternative routes

The district administration and traffic police immediately took charge to control the situation. Vehicles going towards Jaipur were sent through alternative routes so that the pressure on the main highway could be reduced.

Many videos surfaced on social media showed long queues of vehicles on waterlogged roads. At many places, vehicles were seen moving forward while crawling.

Traffic situation worsened at Hero Honda Chowk too

Due to heavy rain in the evening, traffic at Hero Honda Chowk, one of the busiest areas of Gurugram, was completely affected. Due to waterlogging and increasing number of vehicles, there was a long traffic jam here too.

People returning home from offices had to spend many times more time on the road than on normal days. The traffic police continued to make efforts to evacuate the vehicles smoothly.

Problems increased due to landslide on Mumbai-Pune Expressway

In Maharashtra too, continuous rain increased the problems of the people. Traffic was affected for about 19 hours due to a landslide in the ‘Missing Link’ section near Khandala exit of Mumbai-Pune Expressway.

A huge amount of debris fell from the hill onto the road, causing a long queue of vehicles on the expressway. Thousands of passengers traveling between Mumbai and Pune were left stranded for hours.

Movement restored after removing debris

As soon as information about the landslide was received, the administration and related agencies reached the spot and started relief work on a large scale. With the help of heavy machines, debris was removed from the road and after safety check the traffic was gradually normalized.

According to officials, vehicular movement was resumed only after the road was completely safe.

More heavy rain likely now

The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rain in many states in the coming days. In view of this, people have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and follow weather related warnings.

Instructions have been issued to exercise extra vigilance, especially in hilly areas and waterlogged areas.

The administration appealed to the people

In view of the continuous rain, the administration has appealed to the people to get the latest information about traffic and weather before setting out on a journey. Avoid waterlogged roads and follow the instructions of the local administration in case of emergency.

Experts say that due to the active monsoon, its impact on traffic and life can be seen in the coming days also. In such a situation, only vigilance and better traffic management can reduce the problems of the people.
