According to the information received, fire brigade and rescue teams from Kalpetta immediately reached the spot after receiving information about the landslide. A search operation has been started on war level and the administration is trying to find out how many people are trapped under the debris.

265 mm rain in 24 hours

This hilly area in Wayanad has been experiencing torrential rain for the past 24 hours. According to official information, as much as 265 mm of rain has been recorded in this area, and the officials say that due to this heavy rain, the hillside collapsed. The administration had temporarily suspended the construction at the tunnel site since Monday as a precautionary measure due to the warning of the Meteorological Department and the increasing rains. Due to this, it is being said that a major loss of life has been avoided at this place.

Locals rushed to help before the system arrived

Even before the disaster management and emergency teams reached the spot, the citizens of Kane and the local area showed unparalleled bravery and immediately started rescue operations. Locals pulled out 3 people safely from the debris. According to the administration, the rescued citizens were living in temporary sheds erected for the workers of the tunnel road project. A thorough investigation is underway to see if any more laborers or local residents are trapped under the debris. Residential houses and commercial homestays in the area have also been affected by the landslide, and many vehicles of the workers have been crushed under the debris.

Rescue operation started by NDRF

Local police, fire brigade and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) units have been deployed to speed up rescue operations at the spot. Minister of Kerala T. Siddique and Wayanad District Collectors themselves have reviewed the incident site and are keeping a close eye on the relief work. The ‘Anakkompoyil-Meppadi Tunnel Road’ project, where the accident occurred, is considered to be a very important infrastructure project to improve communication and connectivity between Malappapuram and Wayanad districts. The work of this tunnel started last year. An inquiry is now likely to be conducted by the technical committee as to whether the landslide has caused any internal damage to the structure of the ongoing project.
