Under the Malappuram-Wayanad Tunnel Project, Malappuram is to be connected to Wayanad through a tunnel. The length of the tunnel is approximately 8.17 km. Its cost is around ₹2,100–2,200 crore. Two years ago too, there were three landslides one after the other in Wayanad, in which more than 400 lives were lost.
Know what is the reason for landslide in Wayanad?
Wayanad is in the North-East of Kerala. This is the only plateau area in Kerala. That is, an area with high and low mounds of soil, stones and trees and plants growing on them. According to the 2021 report of the Geological Survey of India, 43 percent of the area of Keralam is affected by landslides. 51 percent of Wayanad’s land is covered with hill slopes. That means the possibility of landslide remains very high.
The Wayanad Plateau lies at an altitude of 700 to 2100 meters in the Western Ghats. The Arabian Sea branch of the monsoon hits the Western Ghats of the country and rises, hence this area receives a lot of rainfall during the monsoon season. Kabini river is in Wayanad. Its tributary Mananthavady originates from ‘Thondaramudi’ peak. Due to landslide, there has been huge loss due to flood in this river.
