Punjab is making a dent in the improving Congress, how will Rahul Gandhi overcome it?

The Congress Party is making continuous efforts to improve its organization and performance after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Somewhere Congress seems to be improving it. Party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi have made organizational changes in many states. Also, the party has been successful in forming government in an important state like Kerala. However, Congress was already expected to come to power in Kerala. The party has similar hopes in Punjab too, where it is contesting from the Aam Aadmi Party.

The Congress high command has recently very peacefully taken over power from Siddaramaiah in Karnataka and handed it over to DK Shivakumar. But amidst this hope in Punjab, the internal strife of the Congress has come to the fore, which is raising a big question on the image of the party. Congress, which is making organizational changes, is once again going through a difficult phase. A rebellion-like situation is arising in Punjab Congress due to the recent incidents. This is the reason why it is being said that Punjab is putting a dent in the improving Congress.

Channi is in full mood to rebel

In fact, former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi is in a mood to rebel against the Congress top leadership. Channi is angry at not being made the state president of Punjab. The Congress High Command has retained the current President Amarinder Singh Raja Warding as the State President of Punjab.

Former CM Charanjit Channi has opened a front against this decision of the Congress High Command. Supporters of Charanjit Singh Channi demand that their leader be handed over the command of Punjab Congress. Whereas, to smoothen the equation in Punjab, Congress has given Channi the important responsibility of being in-charge of the election campaign for the upcoming assembly elections of the state.

Channi is walking on a different path

Last Monday, angry Charanjit Channi held a meeting with his supporting leaders at his residence in Punjab. By sharing the video and pictures of this meeting on social media, he gave the message of ‘Strength in Unity’. This message was clearly to the Congress high command. Meanwhile, in a tweet after the meeting, he said, ‘Congress leaders met me at my home and appealed to me to place the feelings and expectations of the people of Punjab before the high command.’

What is the challenge before Rahul Gandhi?

For former Congress President Rahul Gandhi, this is not just a state dispute but there are many political reasons behind it. The biggest problem before him is to keep the party united before the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections in 2027. If Rahul is not successful in doing this then Congress may face disappointment from Punjab.

‘AAP’ may get benefit from the fight

Punjab is one of the few states where Congress still hopes to return to power. This hope is also because in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, 7 out of 13 Lok Sabha seats of Punjab were won. Whereas, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party got 3 seats and Shiromani Akali Dal got only one seat. Apart from this, two independent candidates also won. In such a situation, Congress also has a golden opportunity to return to power in Punjab.

But, if factionalism between Charanjit Singh Channi and Amarinder Singh Raja Wadding increases in Punjab, then the ruling Aam Aadmi Party and the opposition BJP can directly benefit from it. In such a situation, Congress wants to create the image of a united opposition at the national level, but the dispute in Punjab can weaken that message.
