Rain wreaks havoc in Maharashtra: 5 dead in Pune; Red alert in Raigarh-Ratnagiri, Mumbai-Goa highway closed for 32 hours

Pune/Mumbai, July 7. Continuous torrential rains in Maharashtra have badly affected life. Due to heavy rainfall for the last three-four days, a situation of floods and landslides has arisen in many districts including Pune, Raigarh and Ratnagiri. So far, 5 people have died in rain-related accidents in Pune district, while 20 people have been injured. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the next 48 hours for the coastal districts.

Huge loss due to landslides and accidents in Pune

According to Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi, many areas of the district recorded more than 200 mm of rainfall during the last two days. Landslides occurred at 22 places in the district and wall collapse occurred at one place. Five people lost their lives and 20 others were injured in these accidents. The administration took prompt action and evacuated many people safely from waterlogged areas. As a precautionary measure, a total of nine routes including two major roads in the district have been closed for traffic.

Administration’s special appeal to Warkaris

In view of the Varkari Yatra originating from Dehu and Alandi, the administration has appealed to the devotees to join the Yatra from the Pune Municipal Corporation area or further scheduled stops instead of directly reaching the highly waterlogged and crowded areas.

Relief operations intensified in Lonavala and Raigarh

In view of the continuously rising water level in Lonavala, additional teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed. At the same time, State Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare reviewed the situation in Raigarh and Ratnagiri by holding a meeting with disaster management officials at the State Emergency Operations Center. NDRF team is already deployed in Mahad, while 145 additional rescue personnel have been demanded for Sudhagarh and Roha. Help of local voluntary organizations is also being taken in relief work.

Mumbai-Goa highway closed for 32 hours

The Mumbai-Goa National Highway has been closed for more than 32 hours due to incessant rain and strong winds. Thousands of passengers are stranded due to road blockage in Raigarh area. The administration is running a campaign to remove debris from the road and rescue the stranded people.

Next 48 hours are very important

Administration and Minister Aditi Tatkare have appealed to the citizens that the next 48 hours are extremely sensitive. People should not leave their homes without essential work and avoid unnecessary travel. The Meteorological Department has also predicted heavy to very heavy rain in the coastal areas, due to which there is a danger of floods and landslides.
