Life disrupted due to heavy rains in Gujarat: 5 people died in Surat, schools and colleges closed

Surat, 8 July. Heavy rains in many parts of South Gujarat have completely disrupted normal life. Surat district has been most affected by this, where five people have died in the last two days. 2,100 people have been evacuated to safe places from flood affected areas.

305 mm rain in 10 hours in Kamrej tehsil of Surat district

Kamrej tehsil of Surat district recorded 305 millimeters (mm) of rain in a span of 10 hours till 4 pm on Tuesday, officials said. Schools and colleges remained closed in Navsari and Surat districts on Tuesday and Wednesday in view of heavy rains.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its forecast that during the last 24 hours, extremely heavy rainfall occurred at some places in Surat, Valsad, Dadra and Nagar Haveli in South Gujarat region. It rained with strong winds and lightning, forcing many people to stay indoors.

Surat Municipal Corporation Commissioner M. Nagarajan told reporters that around 2,100 people from different areas have been shifted to safe shelter homes. An official of the District Disaster Management Office confirmed that a total of five deaths have been reported in rain-related incidents in the last two days. In this sequence, today there is news of death of two people due to electric shock while another person died in Kamrej area. Earlier on Monday, two people had lost their lives due to electrocution in Rander area of ​​Surat.

If seen, many tehsils of Surat received more than 200 mm of rain during the day. Kamrej tehsil recorded 305 mm rainfall between 6 am and 4 pm on Tuesday, while Surat city received 260 mm rainfall and Palsana town received 205 mm rainfall. Navsari tehsil of Navsari district received 195 mm rainfall. Jalalpore recorded 177 mm rainfall. The Municipal Corporation Commissioner has advised citizens to come out of their homes only when necessary in view of the torrential rains.

The IMD said that the southwest monsoon has advanced into the remaining parts of Gujarat. In view of the ‘Red Alert’ issued by the Meteorological Department, Navsari district administration kept all Anganwadis, schools, colleges and industrial institutions closed in the district on Tuesday.
