Looted the whole world including India for years… Now what compensation is Britain demanding from these countries? Know the whole controversy

British Colonial Reparations Controversy: Britain had established colonial rule over about 50 countries of the world including India in the 18th and 19th centuries. During this period, Britain committed many atrocities in these countries and filled its coffers by looting their wealth, but now a leader of the same Britain has demanded that these former colonized countries should pay compensation to Britain.

The name of this leader is Suella Braverman. Suela is a British citizen of Indian origin. She has also been the former Home Minister of Britain. He says that instead of demanding compensation from Britain, these colonized countries should return the money that the British Empire had spent for their development works. Suela has also taken the name of India prominently in this. He claimed that it was Britain because of which these countries today have democracy, railway lines and are developed. In such a situation, the question arises that how much truth is there in Suella Braverman’s claim? What is this whole controversy? And why is Britain demanding compensation from these countries?

What is the whole controversy?

This entire controversy recently started from the Caribbean country Jamaica. Like India, Jamaica was also a slave of the British Empire for years. Jamaica recently announced that it will visit Britain’s King Charles III and demand reparations from him for the slave trade that took place during the colonial period. The Government of Jamaica announced that they are going to send a delegation for this which will meet King Charles in England on September 6 and present their demands to him.

Suella Braverman gave a statement in protest against this announcement of Jamaica. In this he said that the common citizens of Britain should not be troubled about the events that happened in the 18th and 19th centuries. He said that the countries that were colonies of Britain should not demand compensation. Because Britain laid railway lines in countries like India, made an important contribution to their development and spent millions of British pounds for it. In such a situation, instead of demanding compensation, these countries should return the money to Britain.

How much amount was demanded from Jamaica?

However, Suella did not mention any amount in his statement. But he said that if Jamaica demands compensation from Britain, it will also have to acknowledge that Britain made significant contributions to its development during the colonial period. And if so, then it should be Jamaica, not Britain, that should compensate us.

Why is Jamaica demanding compensation from Britain?

In the year 1833, Britain abolished slavery, during which a law was made in the British Parliament. In this way, the British government took a loan of 20 million pounds, which was 40% of the total budget of Britain. Britain had taken this loan to pay compensation. This compensation was given to the white British who suffered losses due to the abolition of slavery. That is, those who had to free their slaves due to this law.

Whereas the slaves who had been working under torture for years did not get anything. The last installment of this compensation was given in the year 2015. Meaning, years after the end of slavery, it also includes the amount of tax paid to the government by those black citizens. The government gave the same money to the people who had tortured their ancestors. Jamaica considers this wrong and says that the right to compensation belongs to those citizens whose ancestors were exploited.

Did Britain really lay a railway line for development?

There is no doubt that Britain laid railway lines in its colonies, but Britain did this railway line not for the development of Jamaica or India but to accelerate its trade. So that raw materials from remote areas can be easily transported to the ports.

How much did Britain loot from India?

Britain ruled India for about two hundred years. During this period, Britain collected heavy taxes from Indians through trade and tax system in India. According to statistics, Britain looted property worth about 45 trillion dollars (about 45 lakh crore dollars) from India. This amount is about 11 times more than today’s Britain’s GDP of about $4.26 trillion. This claim has been published by Columbia University Press.

The British administration used to collect heavy taxes from Indians. The money received from the same tax was then used to buy cotton cloth, spices and other valuable items from India. The profit made by selling these goods at high prices in Europe was taken to Britain. In other words, Indians’ own property was purchased with their own tax money, while the profits directly bolstered the London treasury and the British economy.

Is democracy Britain’s gift?

Suella Braverman has claimed in her statement that democracy in all the colonial countries including India is the gift of Britain. But the opposite is true. Democracy in India is not the gift of Britain, but when the country got independence after years of struggle, the makers of the Constitution of India and the leaders of the country played an important role in making India a democratic country. Britain had no contribution in this. Apart from this, many people in India lost their lives due to the policies of Britain.
