Protests intensify in PoK, serious allegations against Pakistan regarding action against agitators; leaders are being called terrorists

Srinagar. Tension is continuously increasing amid the ongoing protests in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (POK) demanding political rights and constitutional representation. Organizations associated with the movement have alleged that Pakistani security forces are taking strict action against the protesters and action is being taken by labeling the people leading the movement as terrorists.

Demonstrations continue in many areas

Protests are continuing in several areas including Rawalakot, Muzaffarabad, Mirpur, Kotli, Bagh, Hattian Bala, Sudhnoti, Dherkot and Dadyal. Groups associated with the movement allege that security forces are using force against protesters.

Some local organizations have also made serious allegations like misbehavior with women and disappearance of many young girls. However, these claims have not been independently confirmed and there has been no official response from Pakistan on these allegations.

Accusations against the leaders of the movement

Leaders of the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), which is leading the movement, say that their demands are related to political rights and participation of the local people. The organization alleges that force is being used against peaceful protesters.

According to media reports, the Government of Pakistan is also taking a strict stance regarding the activities of JAAC and many actions including banning it have been taken.

    According to reports, Rawalakot has emerged as a major center of protests. Agitating organizations claim that many people have lost their lives during protests in recent weeks. However, there have been varying claims regarding the number of deaths and the events, which have not been independently confirmed.

    JAAC says that the people of PoK should get political representation, constitutional rights and greater participation in decision making at the local level. The organization alleges that Islamabad is imposing decisions by ignoring the local public opinion.

    On the other hand, Pakistan says that necessary steps are being taken to maintain law and order and deal with security challenges.

    Appeal for help from India

    Some leaders associated with the movement have appealed to the Indian government for support and assistance. At the same time, some organizations working on issues related to PoK have also expressed concern over the situation of the people there.

    At present, there is a big difference in the claims of both the sides regarding the situation in PoK. In such a situation, many allegations and figures related to the incident are yet to be independently confirmed.
