Zohran Mamdani backs Egypt after disputed loss to Argentina
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has reignited debate about the controversial match between Argentina and Egypt with his snarky comment.
The mayor spoke about the match, backing the African nation over their disputed loss.
While promoting a new bus improvement initiative, Mamdani joked that the time New Yorkers would save could be spent debating Egypt’s controversial loss.
Mamdani said “Within six months, you will have spent 24 fewer hours on the bus.”
The mayor said extra time would give New Yorkers space to agree “with your friends that Egypt were robbed yesterday.”
He added later that he would use his own extra minutes to repeatedly watch the disputed VAR decisions.
“With my extra six minutes, I would probably just watch the replays of Egypt getting robbed. Again and again.”
His remarks came after Egypt’s players and coaching staff criticised the officiating following the 3-2 defeat to the defending champions, which resulted in Argentina knocking them out of the tournament on Tuesday.
The match was followed by a debate about the match referees and if the tournament has been rigged.
Argentina will now face Switzerland in Quarter-Finals.
