Heavy rain wreaks havoc in Delhi: Areas submerged in water, 7 year old child dies

New Delhi: On Thursday, there was torrential rain in Delhi and NCR for the second consecutive day. Roads became ponds, traffic jams occurred and a tragic accident also occurred due to waterlogging. A 7-year-old child died due to drowning in a plot filled with rain water in Sanjay Colony.

Innocent lost his life due to drowning in Sanjay Colony   

According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Rehan. He lived in Samaypur Badli area. It is being told that the child was missing from home. After a search of about 2 hours, his body was found in a waterlogged plot. Police have registered the case and started investigation. After post-mortem the body was handed over to the relatives.

This is the second rain-related drowning incident in NCR. On Thursday itself, 3 year old Pallavi fell into a drain while playing outside the house in Vijay Nagar, Ghaziabad and died by drowning. This is the fourth death related to rain in Delhi. Three people have lost their lives after a three-storey building collapsed in Rohini on Wednesday.

Where and how much rain in Delhi-NCR   

According to IMD data, the highest rainfall of 160 mm was recorded in Khajuri in north-east Delhi on Thursday. After this, there was 103 mm rainfall in Mayur Vihar, 90 mm rainfall in Delhi University and 86 mm rainfall in Mehrauli. Pus and Lodhi Road AWS recorded 83 mm rainfall each, Lodhi Road 80 mm, Ridge 78 mm, Safdarjung 72.6 mm and Chhatarpur 72 mm rainfall.

Palam and Narayan received 63 mm rainfall each, Janakpuri 62 mm, Ayyanagar 57 mm, Pragati Maidan 50 mm, Najafgarh 43 mm, Mungeshpur 41 mm, Jharoda Kalan 33 mm and Jafarpur 6 mm. Due to continuous rain, the temperature of Delhi also dropped. The maximum temperature in Safdarjung was 29.2 degrees, which is 7.4 degrees below normal. The minimum temperature was recorded at 24.3 degrees.

Meteorological Department alert: Rain on Friday also  

The Meteorological Department has said that rain may continue in the capital on Friday also. Unless this system moves northwards, there are chances of heavy rain in Delhi-NCR.

However, the news of relief is that from July 12, the weather is likely to clear up and the rain will reduce. Till then the problem of waterlogging and traffic may persist. The administration has appealed to the people to stay away from drains, open manholes and waterlogged areas during the rains. Do not let children go out alone.
