Sheikh Hasina: Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina has made a big statement. He has said that he and other exiled leaders of his party Awami League are planning to return to Bangladesh voluntarily by the end of this year. She said that she knows that she may be arrested or killed as soon as she returns to the country, but despite all this she will return to Bangladesh and surrender.
Even if death occurs, it should be on the soil of one’s own country – Hasina
78-year-old Sheikh Hasina revealed this while talking to news agency Reuters. He said that he was fully aware of the risks of his return. Hasina said, ‘They can arrest me as soon as I return, they can even kill me. Still I have to go back. The former PM said that his party’s leaders and workers are being continuously tortured. Hasina emotionally said that even if she dies, it should be on the soil of her country, where her parents are buried and where their blood was shed.
Hasina has been living in exile since 2024
She left the country and came to India after the student movement in August 2024. His government fell due to widespread protests. Since then she has been living in exile. He did not clarify at all whether he had any kind of discussion with the current government or officials of Dhaka regarding his return to Bangladesh.
Death penalty for crimes against humanity
This statement of Sheikh Hasina comes just a few months after the International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh convicted her of crimes against humanity and sentenced her to death. The court acknowledged the role of Sheikh Hasina in taking action against the protesters during the 2024 student movement. The verdict said that she either ordered the killing of the protesters or failed to stop them.
Action also taken against former Home Minister and former Police Chief
The court also sentenced former Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death in the same case. Former Inspector General of Police Chaudhry Abdullah al-Mamun was sentenced to five years in prison. The court also ordered to confiscate the properties of Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal. Now, Sheikh Hasina’s announcement of returning to Bangladesh in December has once again created political turmoil in the country.
