Sanctions that violate sovereignty should be ended immediately, India demands!

India has demanded the end of economic sanctions and sanctions, calling them a hindrance to economic and social development and a violation of countries’ sovereignty. “As the world’s largest democracy, India considers multilateralism as its core belief,” Counselor in the Permanent Mission of India Aldos Mathew Punnus told the UN General Assembly on Friday.

He said sanctions and economic sanctions hinder the protection of human rights. This adversely affects the basic rights like development, food security, education and health as well as the right to development.

“We therefore join other countries in calling for an end to sanctions that hinder the economic and social development of the populations of affected countries, especially women and children,” Punnoose said.

He also recalled that the United Nations General Assembly has urged all countries not to enact or maintain laws and measures that have extraterritorial effect that impairs the sovereignty of other countries.

He added, “Year after year, the General Assembly has refused to enact laws and regulations that affect other countries, as well as other coercive economic measures that adversely affect the progress and well-being of people around the world.”

Punnus made this statement in the General Assembly in the context of the stringent US sanctions imposed on Cuba. In fact, this topic is discussed every year in the General Assembly, after which resolutions demanding the removal of these restrictions have been passed continuously since 1992.

Recently, President Donald Trump had imposed other restrictions on buying oil from Russia, which India also had to face. However, the US Supreme Court had removed this ban of the Trump government. India has always stood its ground against countries that impose unilateral sanctions and embargoes.

Aldos Matthew Punnus said that the unilateral economic sanctions imposed by the US on Cuba are contrary to the global majority opinion repeatedly expressed at the UN, US responsibilities under the UN Charter and international law.

He said that despite these sanctions, Cuba has made an important contribution to global health services by sending its medical personnel to countries in need and the international community should give due recognition to this contribution.

Although in the last few years, this ban has been relaxed and tightened further, but US President Donald Trump has made it more stringent by adopting a strategy of exerting maximum pressure against Cuba.

Speaking at the assembly earlier this week, US Permanent Representative Mike Waltz denied that there was a blockade or embargo and cited aid ships Cuba had received from several countries.

He said, “There is no US blockade on Cuba. The real sanction in Cuba is the guillotine that the government has hanged on the heads of its own people.”

He also said the US itself is providing $100 million ($100 million) in aid to Cuba and is working with the Catholic Church to deliver food and medicine to those in need.
