A very wonderful and big good news is coming for millions of passengers traveling daily in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. Kolkata Metro’s ambitious Purple Line project has crossed a historic and major milestone. The underground tunneling (Surang Nirman) work on this route has been officially successfully completed. After completion of the work by tunnel boring machines, the way has now been completely cleared for direct connectivity between Joka and Esplanade, known as the heart of Kolkata. With the commencement of this route, people are going to get relief from the heavy traffic jams on the busiest roads of the metropolis.

Tunneling work completed: How will Esplanade be directly connected to Joka?

This underground section of the Purple Line Metro was considered extremely challenging, as it passes under many old and densely populated areas of the city. The engineers and technical teams of Metro Railway have completed this difficult process of tunneling without any interruption using latest technologies. With the completion of this tunnel, now residents of remote south-western areas like Joka, Thakurpukur and Behala will be able to directly reach the Central Business District i.e. Esplanade in a very short time. Esplanade station is going to be a major interchange hub, which will also directly connect passengers to the Green Line (Howrah Maidan-Salt Lake) and the North-South Blue Line.

There will be huge reduction in travel time: Big relief for daily commuters

Kolkata Metro and urban transport experts say: “With the completion of this important underground link of the Purple Line, the traffic pressure in Diamond Harbor Road and surrounding areas will be reduced by 40 per cent. The journey which currently took one and a half to two hours to travel by buses and autos, will now be completed in just 25 to 30 minutes through the metro. This will not only save time, but will also make the local commute of Kolkata very comfortable and pollution free for the working people and students.”

Railway Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) is now progressing the work of laying tracks inside the tunnel, installing signaling system and interior finishing of stations on a war footing.

Local real estate and South Kolkata markets will get a huge boost

The direct positive impact of this huge infrastructure development is being seen on the local markets of Kolkata and especially the real estate sector of Behala and Joka (Geographical Area). With the news of completion of metro tunneling, property prices and demand for new residential projects in these areas have started increasing rapidly. This route will prove to be a lifeline for people coming to Kolkata main city from Tier-2 and Tier-3 sub-urban areas for job and business. It is expected that after all the technical trials and approval from the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), commercial metro services will be started on this route very soon.
