The fifth and final match of the five-match T20 series between India and England was played on Saturday (11th). In this match, the host England defeated India by 56 runs. With this, India won the series 4-0 and gave a clean sweep. The defeat ended India’s dominance at the top spot in T20 cricket since February 2022. England regained the top spot in the ICC T20 International rankings after winning the series, while India slipped to second place.

The impact of this defeat was not limited to a match or a series. India lost the top spot in the ICC T20 rankings after losing 0-2 against Ireland and 0-4 against England. The Indian team became the top team in T20 in February 2022. Was the top T20 team in the world for about 1600 days, but now England has taken over this position. The English team not only won the series in a resounding manner on the strength of their excellent performance, but also earned the honor of becoming the new top team in T20 cricket.

Buttler and Brooke’s record partnership

Batting first in The Rose Bowl at Southampton, England scored 257 runs for the loss of three wickets. Initially, Phil Salt was bowled by the famous Krishna for just six, but then Jos Buttler and Harry Brook gave the Indian bowlers no chance to make a comeback. The two batsmen put on a record partnership of 233 runs off 102 balls for the second wicket, the highest partnership for any wicket for England in T20 Internationals. Buttler hit 131 runs off 64 balls with 12 fours and eight sixes. Meanwhile, Harry Brook scored an unbeaten 95 off 45 balls with four fours and eight sixes.

Disappointing performance by Indian batsmen

Chasing 258 runs, the Indian team could only score 201 runs for the loss of eight wickets. Opener Abhishek Sharma failed to make a big knock for the third consecutive match and was dismissed for just three runs. Sanju Samson got off to a fast start with 27 off 14 balls, but couldn’t get his innings going. Ishan Kishan made a comeback with a half-century of 56 runs off 35 balls. Skipper Shreyas Iyer scored 28 runs off 16 balls, while Tilak Verma scored a quick knock of 53 runs off 25 balls. However, Shivam Dubey scored 14, Suryansh Shedge 7 and Akshar Patel 3 failed to take the team closer to the target. So, Arshdeep Singh remained unbeaten on four runs.
