US Iran Conflict: What will America do if Trump is assassinated by Iran? Who will be in command and what will be the options?

Trump warning to Iran: US President Donald Trump said earlier this week that he has instructed the American military to attack Iran on a level it has never seen before if Tehran fulfills its old threats to kill them.

His statement came when mourners at the funeral of Iran’s slain Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei were holding posters and banners demanding the death of Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Trump vs Mojtaba Khamenei

Trump wrote on his social media platform on Saturday that Iran has threatened to kill or attempt to kill him. He further said that 1,000 missiles are ready and aimed at the Islamic Republic of Iran, and that if the Iranian government acts on its threat, thousands more missiles will be fired immediately.

Hours later, Iran’s current Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, said Iranians would continue to avenge his father’s murder. We promise to take revenge for your blood and the blood of all the martyrs of these two wars from these criminal and shameful murderers, he said in his speech shown on state television. This revenge is the desire of our country and it must be fulfilled.

What if Iran targets Trump?

The US government does not have any automatic or pre-approved system to take military response if a president is assassinated. If Trump is killed, power will pass to his heir under the 25th Amendment and the Presidential Succession Act of 1947. In that situation, Vice President J.D. Vance would immediately become commander-in-chief and would have the authority to decide on any military response.

Vance can then choose to take action as instructed by Trump. However, they may also decide not to follow those instructions or respond differently. News agency Associated Press said in a report that the US also has detailed plans to continue the government to deal with situations like a nuclear attack or any other major disaster that devastates Washington. However, according to the report, those plans do not include an immediate retaliatory strike after the President’s death, even though the President had previously instructed the military to be prepared for such action.

‘If I am killed, nuke Iran’- Trump

Garrett M. Graff, author of Raven Rock: The Story of the US Government’s Secret Plan to Save Itself — While the Rest of Us Die, told the AP that, in addition to leaving standing instructions for the military in the event of his death, Trump could also tell Vance, something like, ‘If I’m killed, nuke Iran.’
