History cannot be changed in the name of ‘Creative Freedom’: Bittu!

Union Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu raised serious questions on the producers and director of Punjabi film ‘Sutlej’ and said that they cannot present the controversial claims as established history in the name of ‘creative freedom’. He said that the painful history of Punjab is not something to be presented selectively according to a particular story.

Ravneet Singh Bittu issued a statement on ‘X’ challenging the producer and director of the film to make public to the people of Punjab all the documentary evidence, official records, judicial findings and certified figures on the basis of which the figure of 25,000 missing or allegedly illegally cremated people has been shown in the film.

He raised the question that if this number is based only on some guess or allegation, then why was it presented as an established historical fact? Why were viewers not told that this number has not been confirmed in any final judicial decision?

Ravneet Singh Bittu (who is the grandson of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh) said that the people of Punjab should also get answers on those aspects of history that have been ignored in the film. Beant Singh was murdered by Khalistani terrorists in Chandigarh in 1995.

He asked why the killings of innocent Hindus, bus passengers, shopkeepers, government employees, laborers and common citizens during terrorism were not shown with the same seriousness? Why was the sacrifice of the Punjab Police, security forces and the brave citizens who fought against terrorism given less importance? Why is the suffering of thousands of families devastated by terrorist violence almost missing from the story?

The Union Minister of State said that it is not appropriate to exaggerate only one side of history and ignore the pain of other victims. He also questioned why the disputed claims were presented without clearly distinguishing them from allegations, speculations and officially established facts.

Ravneet Singh Bittu said that no responsible filmmaker has the right to distort history by presenting disputed figures as the final truth. He said that Punjab has paid a huge price in the era of terrorism and every innocent victim, irrespective of religion, community or ideology, deserves justice and respect.

He demanded the filmmakers to make public the documentary basis of the figure of Rs 25,000 within a reasonable time. If they fail to present credible and verified evidence, they should clarify before the people of Punjab that this data is not officially verified.

The Union Minister of State warned that if this is not done, the government will consider available legal and constitutional remedies so that historical facts are not misrepresented before the country. “Punjab’s history cannot be rewritten through selective storytelling. Truth must prevail over propaganda, facts over fiction and evidence over emotions,” he said.
