Immediately after the boat capsized, local authorities started the rescue operation and the search for the passengers aboard is ongoing. Seeing the overturned boat, many nearby tourist boats reached the spot and joined the rescue. A boat operator involved in the rescue told Vietnamese news website VnExpress International that his boat reached the spot in about five minutes. However, the rescue operation proved difficult as many passengers were trapped inside the overturned boat. “Only a few people were pulled out conscious,” VnExpress International quoted the boat operator as saying.
The report said that the sea condition near An Thoi was rough at the time of the incident. Although it was not raining, tourist boats were plying in that area when the accident occurred.
Another boating accident after one year
This latest accident comes almost a year after another major boating disaster in Vietnam. In July 2025, a tourist boat carrying 48 people, including at least 20 children, capsized in Ha Long Bay during a sudden storm, killing at least 35 passengers. The boat overturned due to strong winds. This incident had once again raised concerns about maritime safety and emergency preparedness at the country’s famous tourist destination.
