Vietnam Boat Tragedy: Indian tourists’ boat capsized in Vietnam, 15 died tragically… see list, helpline issued

Indian tourists’ holidays at Vietnam’s famous tourist destination Phu Quoc island turned into mourning when a speedboat carrying 32 Indian tourists and four crew members capsized in the sea on Saturday. In this horrific accident, 15 Indian tourists died due to drowning, while 21 people were rescued safely. Confirming the deaths, the Indian Embassy said that 10 of them were residents of Tamil Nadu, 3 of Andhra Pradesh and 2 of Kerala.

Accident happened while returning to N Thoi port

The accident occurred near Phu Quoc island when the speedboat was returning from Me Rut Island to An Thoi port. The weather suddenly worsened at around 1 pm local time. Due to strong winds and high waves, the boat lost its balance and overturned in the sea. The accident took place on Hon Mein Road, about 400 meters away from Ngoi Island.

21 people were evacuated safely, condition of two is critical

After the accident, relief and rescue operation was started immediately on a large scale. According to Dr. Arja Srikanth, Special Representative at the Indian Embassy and Andhra Pradesh Bhawan in New Delhi, 21 people were evacuated safely. These include 17 Indian tourists, 3 crew members and 1 attendant. All the injured have been admitted to the hospital. The condition of most of them is said to be stable, while two tourists are still admitted in the ICU and their condition remains critical.

People from which states were included in the dead?

According to official information released by the Indian Embassy, ​​those who lost their lives in the accident:

  • 10 citizens of Tamil Nadu

  • 3 citizens of Andhra Pradesh

  • 2 citizens of Kerala are included.

The embassy said that the affected families are being continuously contacted and necessary legal and administrative formalities are being completed for the process of bringing the bodies to India.

High waves increased the challenge of rescue

According to local media reports, the rescue operation was quite challenging due to strong waves in the sea. Many tourists were trapped at the bottom of the boat. Initially other boats present nearby helped in evacuating the people. After this, Vietnam’s Coast Guard and Border Guard teams reached the spot. Relief operations were carried out with the help of big ships, high-speed rescue boats and about 40 soldiers. Meanwhile, 70 other foreign tourists stranded on the island were also evacuated to a safe place.

Indian Embassy released helpline numbers

After the incident, the Indian government immediately activated the assistance system. Emergency control rooms operating 24 hours a day have been set up in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. Indian officials are working with the Vietnamese administration to monitor the treatment of the injured and other necessary arrangements.

President, PM Modi expressed condolences

Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar has expressed condolence over the death of 15 Indian tourists when a boat capsized in Vietnam. “Deeply saddened by the boat accident involving Indian nationals near Phu Quoc, Vietnam,” Jaishankar said on social media platform

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Draupadi Murmu and Chief Ministers of many states also expressed grief over this incident and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased. A total of 36 people were on board the boat, including 32 Indian tourists and four local crew members. Of these, 21 people were saved. Phu Quoc is the largest island in Vietnam and is a popular tourist destination for its white sandy beaches, coral reefs and island hopping.
