According to the BIMCO-ICS Seafarer Workforce Report 2026, India has now become the second largest seafarer supplier country in the world.
What was revealed in the report?
Published every five years, the report is considered the most reliable assessment of workforce demand and supply across the global maritime industry. According to the latest data, India’s share in the world’s maritime workforce has now reached 12.2 percent. At present, the Philippines still remains at number one position in supplying sailors.
Number of Indian sailors doubled in five years
The biggest thing revealed in the report is that the share of Indian seafarers has almost doubled in the last five years. A senior officer said that India’s real strength is especially visible in the ranks of officers. The country is currently shipping more than 1.4 lakh trained officers around the world, which is 13.4 percent of the global officer workforce. At the same time, about 1.7 lakh support staff i.e. ratings working on merchant ships are also Indians, which is 11.29 percent of the total rating staff in the world.
