Shraddha Valkar murder case: Waiting for last rites even after four years, case pending in court
New Delhi: The long duration of the judicial process in Delhi’s famous Shraddha Walkar murder case is once again in the news. Despite almost four years having passed since the incident, Shraddha’s mortal remains are still preserved as case property in the possession of the court and police. Due to the legal process not being completed, the family has not been able to perform his last rites yet. Meanwhile, after the postponement of the recent hearing, the aggrieved party has started preparations to approach the Delhi High Court to expedite the case.
When will the case be heard?
In order to speed up the hearing of the case, Saket District Court had scheduled continuous hearing from July 20 to July 27. However, before the commencement of the hearing, accused Aftab Poonawala told the court that he has his MA (Sociology) examination on July 20 at the IGNOU examination center located in Tihar Jail. After this information, the court postponed the hearing to 20th July and fixed the next date as 21st July.
The aggrieved party expressed objection
Advocate Seema Samridhi Kushwaha, on behalf of the victim’s side, has objected to this decision. He says that the schedule of the examination is decided in advance, hence its information should have been given to the court well in time. They allege that repeated delays in the hearing are causing unnecessary delays in the disposal of the case.
For how many months has the trial been going on?
According to the lawyer, the trial of this case has been going on for the last three years, but the decision has not been taken yet. For this reason, Shraddha’s mortal remains have not been handed over to the family. He told that the death of his daughter and the long wait for justice proved to be a deep mental shock for Shraddha’s father, due to which he died of a heart attack in February 2025.
What is the demand of the victim party?
The victim’s side alleges that the defense side is continuously trying to postpone the hearing by citing various reasons. Now the family wants that the hearing of the case should be expedited, so that the judicial process can be completed soon and Shraddha’s remains can be cremated with respect. For this purpose, the aggrieved party is soon preparing to file a petition in the Delhi High Court demanding an early hearing.
