India Condemns Hormuz Ship Attacks At UNSC, Urges Immediate De-Escalation In West Asia

New Delhi: India has strongly condemned the recent attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, describing the renewed escalation of tensions in West Asia as “deeply concerning.” Addressing the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, called for immediate de-escalation and urged all parties to return to dialogue and diplomacy.

During the UNSC debate on the Situation in the Middle East, Harish said India remains deeply concerned by the fresh wave of attacks after a brief pause in hostilities. He stressed that targeting commercial ships and civilian infrastructure threatens regional stability and global trade.

India Raises Maritime Security Concerns

India specifically condemned attacks on commercial vessels, including GFS Galaxy, MT Al Bahiyah,and MT Mombasawhich were targeted while passing through the Strait of Hormuz this month.

Harish revealed that several Indian nationals were injured in the attacks, one Indian citizen lost his life, and another remains missing. He reiterated India’s consistent stand against violence targeting seafarers and called for the immediate restoration of safe and uninterrupted navigation through international waterways.

West Asia Crucial for India’s Economy

Highlighting India’s strong economic links with the region, Harish said West Asia is vital to the country’s trade and energy security. India has annual bilateral trade of around $180 billion with the region, receives over $52 billion in remittances from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, and nearly 10 million Indians live and work in the Gulf.

He said any disruption in the Strait of Hormuz could significantly impact India’s economy and energy supply chains.

India urged the international community not to lose sight of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza while addressing maritime security concerns. Reaffirming support for a two-state solution, India said lasting peace can only be achieved through diplomacy, with a sovereign and viable Palestine living peacefully alongside Israel within secure and recognized borders.
