Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar, the then Maharaja of Mysore, provided about 700 acres of land for the company and also provided financial support.
Apart from this, the then Diwan of Mysore Sir Mirza Ismail also played an important role in taking this initiative forward. With the cooperation of these three, a strong foundation of the aircraft manufacturing industry in India was laid.
early military aircraft
After establishment, the company started aircraft manufacturing with foreign technical cooperation. The early years involved manufacturing and assembly of aircraft such as the Harlow Trainer, Curtiss Hawk Fighter and Vultee Bomber.
In the year 1951 the company was brought under the control of the Ministry of Defence. Thereafter HAL continuously expanded indigenous defense production as per the needs of the Indian Armed Forces.
Today it is playing a big role in both defense and space.

Along with the defense sector, HAL is also contributing to many missions of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). The company produces structures and various technical equipment required for launch vehicles and satellites through its aerospace division.
