Little Italy controversy: Who is Robert Davi? ‘Go back to where you were born’, tells NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani
This time in America’s largest economic city New York, the controversy arose not over any tax, crime or election promise, but over a map. The city administration released a new map of immigrant communities (Immigrant Enclaves), but it did not include ‘Little Italy’, a symbol of Italian-American identity for decades. Hollywood actor Robert Davi got angry on this matter and told New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani – “Go back to where you were born.” After this, this matter was not just a statement, but became a part of the debate about old and new immigrant identity in America.
What is the whole controversy?
The controversy started with an interactive map released by the New York City administration. The purpose of this map was to show the city’s major migrant communities and their historical areas. But it did not include Manhattan’s famous ‘Little Italy’, which for years has been considered the cultural identity of the Italian-American community.
Robert Dewey called this not just an administrative mistake, but an ignorance of Italian-American history and contributions. He said that Italian immigrants have contributed for generations to the creation of New York’s streets, businesses, buildings and cultural heritage. In such a situation, if the city claims to showcase its migratory history, then ‘Little Italy’ cannot be ignored.
What did Robert Dewey say?
The 75-year-old actor sharply criticized Mayor Mamdani by sharing a video on social media platform X. He said that Mamdani should first understand the history of the city whose politics he is doing.
Giving the example of his family, Dewey said that his grandparents came to America from Sicily and Naples, Italy. His grandfather served the United States during World War I and later contributed to the development of New York. He said that this heritage gave him American identity.
During this time, he made a personal comment on Mamdani and said, “Go back to where you were born.” He also said that the people of Italian and Irish origin in New York would never accept this decision.
What answer did Zohran Mamdani give?
Instead of reacting to this controversy, Mamdani gave clarification. He said that the disputed map was not prepared by his government, but it was made during the previous administration in 2023.
He said his team has only added a few new expatriate areas and now other historic communities, including ‘Little Italy’, will also be included in the update. That is, the city administration also admitted that the existing map is incomplete and it will be improved.
Why did this controversy become so big?
This matter is not limited to just one map. There has been a debate going on in America for a long time as to which immigrant communities form the country’s identity.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, millions of immigrants from Italy, Ireland and Europe played an important role in the formation of America’s big cities. Today, new communities of Asian, African and Latin American origin are rapidly gaining political representation.
In such a situation, the disappearance of ‘Little Italy’ from the map has become for many people not just an administrative mistake but a symbol of changing identity politics.
