Commonwealth Games: Dilip Gavit’s gold, Murali’s silver, how far has India reached now?
Wednesday was a very special day for India in the Commonwealth Games. In Para Athletics 100 meter race, Dilip Mahadu Gavit’s gold and Mohammad Basil’s silver have taken India forward. Murali Sreeshankar won silver medal in long jump. After getting another gold, India’s position in the medal tally has improved and now it has moved up one place to 8th. However, India is still far behind compared to its previous performance. The excellent performance of Indian boxers continued with six more boxers making it to the semi-finals, ensuring 10 medals for the country.
This is India’s third gold medal in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Earlier, Mirabai Chanu had won the gold medal in the women’s 48 kg weightlifting category and Sharmila Dhankhar had won the gold medal in the women’s shot put F57 event of para athletics. With Wednesday’s three medals, India has won 15 medals in the Games so far, which includes three gold, nine silver and three bronze. With this, India is at eighth place in the table.
Srishankar, Basil and Dilip showed their magic
Sreeshankar became the first Indian athlete to win two consecutive medals in the long jump event at the Commonwealth Games. 27-year-old Sreeshankar, who won a silver medal in Birmingham 2022, won another silver medal this time with a best jump of 8.09 metres. Before Sreeshankar, only Suresh Babu (men’s bronze, 1978), Anju Bobby George (women’s bronze, 2002) and M Prajusha (women’s silver, 2010) had won medals for India in this event. Following the feat of the Kerala player, India created history in para athletics by securing the top two positions in the men’s 100m T47 event when Dilip Mahadu Gavit won gold and Mohammad Basil Morsingankath won silver.

Dilip won the gold medal by setting a new Games record and his season’s best time of 10.71 seconds. Whereas Basil achieved the silver medal with his season’s best time of 10.83 seconds. The men’s 100 meters T47 event is a sprint competition in para athletics in which athletes with physical disability or lack of one arm participate. This affects the strength, movement or coordination of a part of the body.
Sreeshankar’s opening jump of 8.03 meters took him to third place behind Scotland’s Stephen McKenzie and Jamaica’s Taj Gayle. Both of them had jumped 8.08 metres. 27-year-old Sreeshankar was in a position to win the gold medal for some time with a jump of 8.09 meters but Gayle took the lead with a jump of 8.15 meters and won the gold medal. McKenzie won the bronze medal with 8.08 metres. The other Indian participating in the competition, Lokesh Satyanathan, finished fifth with a best jump of 7.97 metres.

Earlier, by securing 10 medals in different weight categories, India also left behind its previous record of total medals won in boxing at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, while in athletics, Tejinderpal Singh Toor and Samardeep Singh Gill kept their medal hopes alive by reaching the final of shot put. Ankush Panghal (80 kg), Sakshi Choudhary (51 kg), Arundhati Choudhary (70 kg), Sachin Siwach (60 kg), Narendra Berwal (over 90 kg) and world champion Jasmine Lamboria (57 kg) are in the last four with Wednesday’s win along with Lovlina Borgohain (75 kg), Priya Ghanghas (60 kg), Preeti Pawar (54 kg) and Jadumani Singh (men’s 55 kg). Those who arrived were boxers.

Indian athletes Yashas Palaksha and Santosh K Tamilarasan made it to the finals of the men’s 400m hurdles. Both players qualified for the final as the fastest losers in their heats by finishing third behind the two fastest qualifiers. Santosh finished third in the second heat with a timing of 49.51 seconds while Yashas finished third in the first heat with a timing of 49.65 seconds. Santosh finished seventh overall and Yashas finished eighth. The final of the men’s 400 meters hurdles will be held on Friday.
Indian shotput players Tejinderpal and Singh Gill easily qualified for the finals. National record holder Toor achieved the automatic qualification mark of 20 meters from Group A in just two attempts. His first attempt was 19.93 meters and his second was 20.14 meters. He did not make a third attempt. Gill’s best effort from Group B was his first throw of 19.95 metres. The second throw was 19.75 meters and the third was a foul. Manpreet Singh finished fourth in the women’s shot put final with a throw of 17.49 metres.
Indian weight lifter Sanjana was eliminated from the women’s 77 kg category after all three of her attempts in the snatch failed. 19 year old Sanjana could not achieve the target of 94 kg in all three attempts due to which her challenge ended before the clean and jerk. There was a similar performance in the pool as India’s experienced swimmers Sajan Prakash and Anish Gowda could not reach the final of the men’s 200m freestyle event. Sajan finished fifth in his heat and 20th overall.
How many medals have you received so far?
Indian players have so far won a total of 15 medals including 3 gold, 9 silver and 3 bronze. Now if he wants to improve his position in the medal tally, he will have to win at least 4-5 more gold medals. However, this situation will also improve only if Malaysia and South Africa, which are above India, do not get any medal. Let us tell you that Australia is still at the forefront by winning a total of 103 medals including 47 gold. Canada, which is at number two, has won only 14 gold.
