The situation has once again become tense in the neighboring country Nepal. The dispute that started between two groups in eastern Nepal now seems to be spreading to many areas. After the situation worsened, the administration has imposed curfew in three districts bordering India – Dhanusha, Siraha and Saptari. Amidst the violence, a 19-year-old youth has been reported dead in police firing, while several people are said to be injured.
The deceased has been identified as 19-year-old Ganesh Yadav of Siraha district. Information about many people being seriously injured during the police action has also come to light. Amidst the tension, injured protesters were also seen on the streets, after which the administration has taken strict steps to control the situation.
Where did the controversy start and how did the fire spread?
It is being told that the tension started on Sunday night from Kaptanganj, Dewanganj Rural Municipality area of Sunsari district of Nepal. The situation deteriorated here after a clash between two groups. After this the tension gradually reached other areas of Madhesh state. Amidst incidents of demonstrations, stone pelting and vandalism, police had to take action at many places to control the crowd. The worsening of the situation can be gauged from the fact that in Golbazar of Siraha, protesters set fire to 11 motorcycles parked in a public place. After the arson incident, the local administration imposed curfew in Golbazar and surrounding areas.
19 year old youth died in police firing
After the tension in Siraha increased, the situation between the police and the protesters became very tense. To control the crowd, the police released tear gas shells and fired several rounds in the air. Meanwhile, 19 year old Ganesh Yadav died in police firing. There are also reports of many other people being injured. Videos and pictures of some protesters injured and lying on the road have also surfaced. The administration is now busy in normalizing the situation in the violence affected areas and controlling the crowd.
Situation worsens in Janakpur too, curfew from noon
After increasing tension in Janakpur, the capital of Madhesh state, the administration decided to impose curfew. According to the order of the District Administration Office, curfew was made effective from 3:30 pm local time on Thursday. Under the order issued by District Officer Prem Prasad Luitel, apart from the entire area of Janakpur Sub-Metropolitan Municipality, Lakshminiya Rural Municipality and Nagarine Municipality have also been kept under the ambit of restrictions. The aim of the administration is clear – to prevent further spread of violence at any cost.
After Siraha, people took to the streets in Lahan also
The tension was not limited to Golbazar alone. News of the demonstration also came to light in Lahan area of Siraha. Here the situation became more sensitive after people belonging to both the groups took to the streets. As the crowd grew, police used tear gas to disperse the protesters. To control the situation, the police also fired several rounds in the air as a warning.
Concern increased due to curfew in three districts
In view of the continuously worsening situation, the administration has imposed curfew in Janakpur, Siraha and Saptari districts. Security has been tightened in these areas and restrictions have been imposed on the movement of people. The tension that started from one part of Nepal has now reached many districts. The unrest that started from Sunsari has reached Saptari, Siraha and Janakpur, the capital of Madhesh state.
Administration alert after arson and violence
Incidents of damage to public property have also come to light amid the violence. The incident of setting fire to 11 motorcycles in Golbazar has increased the concern of the administration. The local administration is now trying to control the situation by increasing the deployment of security forces in sensitive areas. The priority of the authorities is to prevent further incidents of violence and restore law and order in the affected areas.
