Indian athletes delivered a stellar performance on the eighth day of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, adding two more medals to India’s medal tally. Lovepreet Singh’s impressive performance secured a silver medal in the men’s 110+ kg weightlifting event, while Seema brought glory to India by winning a bronze medal in the women’s discus throw. Furthermore, Indian athletes qualified for the finals in several athletics events, further strengthening medal hopes for the upcoming competitions.
Lovepreet Singh secured second place in weightlifting with a total lift of 388 kg. He successfully lifted 176 kg in the snatch and 212 kg in the clean and jerk. He fell just one kilogram short of the gold medal, but his impressive performance added a valuable silver medal to India’s tally. Meanwhile, Martina Devi also tried her best in the women’s 86+ kg category, but fell short of a medal, finishing fifth.
In the women’s discus throw, Seema won the bronze medal with a best throw of 58.65 meters. Another Indian athlete, Nidhi Rani, also performed well, but narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing fourth. Seema’s medal marked another significant achievement for India in athletics.
There was very positive news for India in the men’s javelin throw. Two-time Olympic medalist Neeraj Chopra reached the final with a best effort of 79.61 meters. Rohit Yadav and Yashvir Singh also performed brilliantly, finishing in the top 12. With all three Indian athletes reaching the final, India’s medal hopes in this event have significantly strengthened.
In the men’s triple jump, Praveen Chitravale and Selva Prabhu also qualified for the final. Both athletes performed well in the qualification round and reached the final. Meanwhile, Tejaswin Shankar remains a top contender in the decathlon, consistently performing impressively. His performances in the long jump and high jump gave him a strong position in the points table.
However, India was unsuccessful in all events. Animesh Kujur failed to reach the final in the men’s 200m race. Vishal TK also failed to reach the final in the men’s 400m race. Tajinderpal Singh Toor and Samardeep Singh Gill made good efforts in the shot put but failed to secure a medal. Parul Chaudhary also failed to reach the podium in the women’s 5000m race.
Indian athletes faced disappointment in track cycling, with no player making it to the medal round. In lawn ball, the men’s pairs team recorded their second consecutive victory, keeping their hopes alive for the next round, while an Indian player suffered a defeat in the women’s singles event.
