Police have reported that some individuals edited a video of PM Modi and shared it on social media, allegedly spreading misinformation. It is reported that Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted a video during a Cockroach Janta Party protest. Some users, using AI tools, altered it and made it viral in a different context. Investigating agencies believe that such videos can mislead people and contribute to the spread of fake information on social media.
Investigation into viral videos on Facebook and Instagram
Media reports have also revealed that alleged morphed videos were shared on Facebook and Instagram. Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police are investigating whether these videos violated the provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology Act (IT Act). The investigation is not limited to the creators of the videos, but also the role of those who contributed to their circulation or spread them on social media.
Meta Requested for Response
Before this incident came to light, Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police summoned Meta officials and sought answers regarding the company’s AI-based system for identifying and removing fake content, scams, and morphed videos. Meta appeared before the investigating officers and provided information about its content moderation system and rules. The company has expressed its cooperation in the investigation.
