India continued its medal-winning run at the Commonwealth Games 2026 on Day 8, adding two more podium finishes to its tally. Weightlifter Lovepreet Singh clinched a silver medal, while discus thrower Seema Kaliramna secured bronze, taking India’s overall medal count to 17 medals — 3 gold, 10 silver and 4 bronze.
Despite the additions, India remained 10th in the medal standings, while Australia continued to lead the table with an impressive haul of 110 medals.
Lovepreet Singh Lifts Silver After Record-Breaking Performance
Lovepreet Singh emerged as India’s standout performer of the day with a remarkable display in the men’s +110kg weightlifting event.
The 28-year-old lifter from Punjab set a new Commonwealth Games record in the snatch by lifting 176kg, giving him a commanding advantage heading into the clean and jerk segment. He eventually finished with a combined total of 388kg (176kg + 212kg).
However, New Zealand’s David Andrew Liti produced a sensational final lift of 223kg in the clean and jerk to set a new Games record and edge past Lovepreet by just one kilogram, claiming the gold medal.
Lovepreet’s silver also marked the conclusion of India’s highly successful weightlifting campaign, which ended with eight medals.
Seema Kaliramna Claims Bronze In Women’s Discus Throw
India’s second medal of the day came through Seema Kaliramna, who delivered a strong performance in the women’s discus throw.
The 27-year-old registered her best throw of 58.65 metres during the third round, which proved enough to secure the bronze medal despite fouling her remaining three attempts.
Jamaica’s Samantha Hall claimed gold with a throw of 61.66m, while Canada’s Julia Tunks took silver after recording 60.67m.
Neeraj Chopra Cruises Into Javelin Throw Final
India also enjoyed a successful day in the athletics qualifiers.
Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, along with Rohit Yadav and Yashvir Singh, comfortably booked their places in the men’s javelin throw final, overcoming challenging windy conditions during qualification.
Meanwhile, national record holders Praveen Chithravel and Selva Prabhu progressed to the men’s triple jump final after finishing second and third in their qualification groups.
Tejaswin Shankar Stays In Medal Hunt
India’s decathlon star Tejaswin Shankar remained firmly in contention for a podium finish after an impressive opening day.
His standout performance came in the high jump, where he cleared 2.15 metres to earn 944 points. After five events, Tejaswin stood second overall with 4,339 points, trailing Canada’s Damian Warner by just 14 points.
Mixed Results For Indian Athletes
Not all events brought success for the Indian contingent.
Asian Games champion Tajinderpal Singh Toor finished fifth in the men’s shot put final, while Samardeep Singh Gill secured seventh place.
On the track, Animesh Kujur failed to qualify for the 200m final, while Vishal TK also missed out on a place in the 400m final after finishing outside the qualification spots.
Distance runner Parul Chaudhary ended her campaign with a 13th-place finish in the women’s 5000m final.
Lawn Bowls Team Keeps Knockout Hopes Alive
India had encouraging results in lawn bowls as Navneet Singh and Dinesh Kumar remained unbeaten after defeating Botswana in a dramatic tie-break, strengthening their chances of reaching the knockout stage.
However, Nayanmoni Saikia suffered a defeat in the women’s singles event against Malaysia’s Emma Firyana Saroji.
Cycling Campaign Ends Early
In cycling, India faced disappointment as para cyclist Lisha Das and the men’s team sprint squad were unable to progress beyond the qualification rounds.
