Commonwealth Games 2026: Discus thrower Seema Kaliraman from Bhiwani, Haryana, brought India pride by winning a bronze medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. The 27-year-old Seema won the bronze medal in the women’s discus throw final with a best throw of 58.65 meters.
Remarkably, despite being away from the sport for two years due to marriage and motherhood, she made a remarkable comeback. She says that her four-year-old son Rudra’s innocent words like “Very Good Mummy” and the support of her husband Ravindra were the biggest strengths of her success.
Despite four fouls in the competition, the medal was assured.
The final event in Glasgow was thrilling and high-pressure. Seema had a total of six attempts, four of which were declared fouls. However, despite the initial setbacks, she remained resolute. She reached third place with a throw of 57.32 meters in her second attempt, and secured the bronze medal with a throw of 58.65 meters in her third attempt. Samantha Hall of Jamaica won the gold medal, while Julia Tunks of Canada won the silver medal.
The Encouraging Voice of Her 4-Year-Old Son
Recalling her struggle to return to the field, Seema explained that she had to stay away from the sport for two seasons after pregnancy and marriage. Just 11 months after the birth of her son, she resumed rigorous training. Whenever she makes a good throw during training, her 4-year-old son, Rudra, encourages her by saying, “Yes, Mom, very good… very good.” According to Seema, these innocent words from her son proved to be her greatest motivation.

Seema is not only bringing glory to the country in sports, but she is also pursuing a PhD in Physical Education from Chaudhary Bansi Lal University.
