New Delhi, 13 July. Delhi’s Karkardooma Court has convicted former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councilor Tahir Hussain in the murder of Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer Ankit Sharma during the 2020 North-East Delhi riots. In this case, the court has also convicted Tahir Hussain along with four other accused (Anas, Qasim, Nazim and Javed) under several serious sections including murder (section 302 of IPC) and inciting riot. Tahir Hussain cried in the court after hearing the verdict.

The court of Additional Sessions Judge Praveen Singh heard the case against a total of 11 accused including Tahir Hussain. The court found five of these accused guilty. The court convicted Tahir Hussain on charges of promoting enmity, rioting, assault, use of criminal force and murder.

This case is based on the case registered in Dayalpur police station. This case was registered on the complaint of Ravindra Kumar, father of IB officer Ankit Sharma. According to the complaint given by father Ravinder Kumar, Ankit Sharma, posted in the Intelligence Bureau, had returned home from office on February 25, 2020. After this he went out of the house again.

Meanwhile, the local people told the family that their son had been murdered. Ankit Sharma’s body was thrown into the Khajuri Khas drain near a mosque in Chand Bagh Pulia area. Later, the police recovered the body of Ankit Sharma from Khajuri Khas drain.

The court marched, Charges were framed in 2023
The court had framed charges against 11 accused including Tahir Hussain on March 23, 2023. All the accused were charged with serious charges like rioting, armed with deadly weapons, spreading enmity between different communities, murder and criminal conspiracy under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.
Aam Aadmi Party had suspended Tahir
After his name came up in this case, Aam Aadmi Party had suspended Tahir Hussain. Along with Tahir Hussain, the 10 other accused include Haseen alias Mullaji alias Salman, Nazim, Qasim, Sameer Khan, Anas, Firoz, Javed, Gulfam, Shoaib Alam alias Bobby and Muntazim alias Musa.
Murder during Delhi riots
It is noteworthy that Ankit Sharma was murdered in February 2020 during the communal violence that broke out in North-East Delhi amid protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act CAA. 53 people were killed and many others were injured in these clashes involving stone pelting, arson and vandalism. Tahir Hussain was also accused of inciting and making statements that spread public unrest.
