Will E20 petrol really reduce your car’s mileage? Government accepted reduction up to 5%, know how much will be the impact on the pocket in a year
Ethanol Blended Petrol: The debate regarding E20 petrol is increasing rapidly across the country. Many vehicle owners are claiming on social media that after using 20% ethanol mixed petrol, the mileage of their car has reduced and some people have also raised questions on the performance of the vehicle. On the other hand, the government and vehicle manufacturing companies are continuously saying that E20 petrol does not cause any harm to vehicles. But the Central Government has admitted that the mileage of some vehicles may be reduced by 3% to 5% but its effect is not the same on every vehicle.
What did the government say that became a topic of discussion?
On this matter, the Central Government has said that the use of E20 petrol may slightly increase fuel consumption in some vehicles. Despite this, the government says that its benefits are much greater. It is being told that E20 can improve engine efficiency, reduce pollution emitted from vehicles and also reduce India’s dependence on crude oil imports. This is the reason why the country is gradually moving towards ethanol blended fuel.
If mileage is reduced by 5%, how much will the expenses increase in a year?
Suppose you drive your car 50 kilometers daily. According to this, the total distance covered in a year will be 18,250 kilometers. If your car earlier gave a mileage of 20 kmpl, you would have required approximately 913 liters of petrol. Now, if the mileage reduces by 5% to 19 kmpl due to E20 petrol, then about 961 liters of petrol will be required for the same distance. This means that approximately 48 liters of additional petrol will be required in the entire year. If the price of petrol is considered to be Rs 100 per liter, then your additional expenditure can reach around Rs 4,800. In cities where petrol is costlier than this, this amount can be even higher.

Is E20 the only reason for low mileage?
For your information, let us tell you that auto experts say that mileage does not depend only on fuel. Vehicle age, engine condition, traffic, tire pressure, use of air conditioner and driving style also play an important role in this. Therefore, it would not be right to consider only E20 petrol solely responsible for the reduction in mileage.
Obnews’s Disclaimer: This calculation is based on an example of 5% mileage reduction for illustrative purposes only. According to the government, the effect of E20 is not the same on all vehicles and actual mileage may vary depending on the vehicle and usage conditions.
